A Time To Be Thankful

I am glad that this Christmas season, when I look around to think of what I want for Christmas, I can say that I have a hard time thinking of what to ask for because God has given me the things that I need to live, work, and function properly. Ultimately though, I thank God for the spirit of contentment that rests in me, that I am happy with what I have and I can make do with what I have.

Before I leave that thought, I just wanted to clarify that it doesn't mean that I don't have dreams for a better life. God puts the dreams in our minds of course and He will equip you to reach for that step by step but again, with a spirit of contentment and patience, that while you don't have it yet, you don't feel that you are at a disadvantage because you haven't reached it.

As I look back on how I started, I can't help but just thank God for where I am today. He has really proven himself faithful countless times in my life ever since I focused on music. He has generously provided me with more than enough and not just my needs but also some of my wants. This is not to say that I have everything and everything that I ever wanted. But I'm the type of person who can live with what I have and be content with it until such time that it stops working or gets damaged, etc. You get the picture I'm sure. I'm really not the type who keeps on letting go of stuff while searching for an elusive "the one" for any particular item. I usually just set my sights to something and then I go for it and once I have it, I'm a happy man. I don't think much of always upgrading to the next "better" thing. I think partly this is also due to how I grew up not always having the best things in life but just enough to get me by. This in turn also helped me to live a no-excuses kind of life. If I had to do or get something, I tried to find and make ways. I rarely found myself having to make an excuse that I "can't" because I "don't have." There are a some people who have difficulty moving forward in life because they always have an excuse for everything when all they had to do was be thankful for their little blessings, that they usually brush aside just because they always think that they can only be the best they can be if they have the best.

What are the things that you should be thankful for? Look around you and take time to think about even the small things that seem mundane. Remember that as simple as those things are, you have those because God made a way for you to be able to afford or enjoy those things. Remember that a lot of other people have it really bad especially with the recent storm that hit Davao. Be thankful and spend time to pray for our brothers and sisters who were affected by the storm.

Lastly... do you know how being content can also help others? Well, once you are, you'll be able to see the bigger picture and be a blessing to others because you yourself have been blessed. Instead of buying that expensive watch, you can set aside some money to give to charity, etc. Again, you may not have your dream house yet... but you have a house. You may not have a car yet... but you always have money for the daily commute. You may be eating the 50 peso mcdo meal but you're eating in Mcdo... etc. Count your blessings.

There really are so many things to be thankful for so as you finish this entry of mine, take the time to look around and thank God for being faithful and loving to you as He always makes sure that your needs are always met.

Be a blessing to others this Christmas!

God bless!

Three of my Goals for 2013

In Habakuk 2:2, it reads

And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.

I decided to write this down and share it with everyone so that anyone who reads this, may it be my family, friends or other relatives, can run with and pray for me as I take on this task claiming for the best outcome :)

1. BREAKS

Since I love producing breakbeat tracks, I'm gunning to get in the best Breaks labels in the world. I'm targeting the top 15 labels housing the best of the best out there. As it is, it's already a blessing to have released under Kick It Recordings, which has Access Denied releasing with them as well, who is one of the major players in the breaks scene. The goal for me now is to get in on the top labels and to be recognized as a breaks producer who can deliver. If I can even get a mention at the annual Breakspoll then that would really make my year!

Right now, i'm finishing mixing and mastering, during my free time, my recent 3 best breaks tracks to be submitted for consideration. Once that's done, I blast it off to the labels and see who responds :)

I'm pretty excited. Really excited.

2. SCORING

I'm planning to prepare a major demo reel of mine for scoring. This is the bigger task since I am starting everything from zero. I plan to make fresh ones and really take my time to produce, mix, and master all of them to pretty high standards to be able to present myself to filmmakers locally and abroad. Of course I want to channel local filmmakers first since I also want to be a player in bringing the quality of local music scoring up. I want to at least, to the best of my abilities, be able to produce scores that can deliver. It may not be as grand as "hollywood" sounding because I don't have a full orchestra in my studio, but that is the target. To get as close to that within my capabilities.

I'm starting over with new ones because I want to really nail things down. I have a pretty good bank of works done in the past decade but this is also a challenge that I put on myself to do new and better ones... Music scoring that I've NEVER done before. That is the challenge for me.

3. TRIKE RECORDS

Lastly, I am now finally going to focus on regular releases for my label, Trike Records. I hope to release monthly at least and twice a month if I can. I'll primarily be releasing silverfilter material of course but will be including releases from other local producers as well. I can't commit now though to regular names because it's also hard to get consistent commitments from other producers so we may just feature some people from time to time if they are able to submit anything for release. So lately I've been looking around for local remixers for my tracks to feature them instead. It's less pressure this way. This is to also help them get their name out so let's see how this goes!

Here's hoping for the best and to fulfilling dreams and achieving our goals in 2013!

Time Can Help Your Mixes

Screen_shot_2012-12-07_at_12

I've just finished mastering my latest EP and to some extent, I can say I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Now how is it related to my title? Well, if I look back to the tunes I've mixed and mastered yeeeeaaarsss back, I can definitely say I've come a long way. Time does indeed help you out improve your sound.

How? Spend time with it. It took me years to be able to ge the sound that I'm getting now from my final output.

If you want to improve your mixes, then mix a lot. Practice practice practice. Spend time listening closely to your tracks and learn to listen critically on how your favorite tunes were mixed. Pick out some nice reference tracks that you want to study and listen to not to enjoy but to dissect. Don't try to go through it too quick and expect to get a nice polished sound. At first, you may think or feel that you're not getting there at all but my advice is to be patient and keep at it. We all go through it and those who come out after are the ones who come up with decent mixes all ready for mastering and release.

Also try to read up on mixing and how each mixing device works and how it can improve (or destroy) your sound. Not knowing what to do will take up a lot of your time trying to tweak things because you rely more on trial and error. Of course in the beginning, that's how it is so you can train your ears on what each knob does to the sound. Don't stop at just knowing that "this knob that says threshold does this to my sound." Understand what the knob's function is and why it's there.

Don't always rely on "what they say" because people have different approaches to mixing. There are of course guidelines to follow to help you through, but don't hold on to what you may hear from someone as "the right way" all the time. Some may prefer compressing every track on his project and some may just rely on automation.

Also try to understand arrangement and dynamics. This can definitely help your mixes as it can help you tell a story not just with your music elements but also with how you mixed it. How you pull down or pull up volumes or automate things add to the story of your final track.

You may have heard and read this a lot of times already but it's worth reminding... try to listen to your mix in different listening environments like your car, a pair of headphones, hifi components, and even your laptop speakers. You'll be surprised how this can help you fine tune your mix.

Rest your ears. Don't go mixing a whole album in one day and then be surprised the next day why it didn't sound as it did the day before. Give your ears some rest between mixes. If you want to master it also then do it another day.

Now, I'm not trying to say I'm an expert because I don't think I am. I'm just here to share what I've learned along the way having time and practice behind me so that all of you guys who are new at this can at least get there quicker.

At the end of the day, trust your ears. You may read a lot about mixing, hear a lot about "how to do it" but just arm yourself with the knowledge and always trust your ears in the end.

Have fun!

Lookin' for silverfilter Roadie/PA :)

When I first posted the announcement, I received an email asking about the description and qualifications so I decided to post it here on my blog as well to make things straightforward :)

Well, I'm basically looking for a roadie/PA: someone I can train for setup, help carry stuff, assist with whatever's needed during gigs. I'm hoping to find and stick to one who is willing to take on the task for the fun and experience and who's in it for the long haul. Of course for paid shows, then he will definitely be compensated for as well.

I'm looking for a commited one so that I can stick with that one whether it be for local manila gigs as well as for out of towners as I plan to be busy this 2013.

Qualifications: Just someone with a heart willing to learn and someone who would be fun to hang with as well.

It's About Time

I dunno why it took me so long but I guess it's better late than never :)

For the past days (and in the coming ones), I have started to consolidate all of my releases and I've just been uploading most of the time and tagging everything. I realized it's about time I put together my releases and start letting people know that there have been a few already over the years and I need to draw people to what was on offer before.

So mainly, I've been loading it up heavily on my bandcamp site http://silverfilter.bandcamp.com so everyone who plans to buy my albums and releases may also do so there. I figured it would also be easier on my end to maintain and have more focus on a site like that as a host then into my official site.

Also, I am slowly preparing my back catalog that were just once released independently, to be uploaded and released into the digital stores we all love like iTunes, Beatport, Juno, Amazon, and tons more. So expect that before the year ends, hopefully all my stuff are up on those stores.

That's it! That's what's been happening lately. It's not much but these are the small things I failed to do before, that in reality, were the most important :/

I've also sent a proposal to get my new chillout album sponsored so help me pray for that! :)

See you in the next one.

November Update

Moving forward after a stressful work month in October, I've come to realize a lot of things... seriously.

One thing I learned is that it's better to release the material and learn as I go than to just keep all my tunes locked up in my hard disc for literally years. That is why from now on, I shall aim to be consistent in my releases and stop being too critical of myself thinking a tune isn't good enough yet that is stays dormant until I forget about it. Believe me, I've got tons of tunes that are sleeping here :/

___

Anyway, I just finished a few minutes ago, sending my latest single to Deeper Manila. As some of you know, I also am part of the artist roster releasing on that label as I am in full support of our local dance labels. From now on though, I guess it'll be twice the work because I also have my own label, Trike Records, to look after. So it'll be quite a busy one on both camps.

___

And in other news, while I was searching for my tunes on Beatport, I happened to find out that one of my most recent releases Hangin On is included in the Breaks and Beats Essentials Vol. 1 compilation released over on Beatport. Hope you can check it out and support the release!

http://www.beatport.com/release/breaks-and-beats-essentials-vol-1/970712

___

I'll be making time to get back on my "artist" feet with the label and the releases in the coming weeks. Slowly but surely. I'll really make it a point to get to it now.

Hope you guys are still around :)

Mac DVD regions annoying you?

Here's a quick and easy way to sort out the DVD region problem you may have in playing different DVDs on your MAC.

What problem you say? Well, if you have different DVDs that run in different regions, chances are, it won't play on your Mac because it's set to only read a particular region. DON'T keep on selecting a region because you only have 5 chances to change it and you're left with the last region... very bad Apple.

Here's how to get around it easily...

Just download VLC player http://www.videolan.org/

Don't open your DVD player software on your Mac. Instead, when the DVD is detected and appears on your desktop, simply drag the icon into VLC for it to play. IGNORE the prompt Mac will give for you to change your DVD drive's region preference. Don't choose a region and don't press cancel as well since it will eject your disc. Just follow the instructions I wrote previously :)

Enjoy!

My Guetta Thanks and Then Some...

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted, liked, clicked, promoted, listened and shared to help get me to the top 5 DJs to compete for the opening slot for David Guetta. I appreciate ALL THE HELP!

If you missed it, here's a video of the actual recording I submitted for the competition

As an electronic music producer like him, there are a number of tunes of his from the non-commercial/pop side of things that I dig (like The Alphabet and Lunar) and I respect him for that. When I first heard those tracks, I was blown away because all I was familiar with were his pop hiphouse tunes but some of the tracks on the 2nd CD were straight up tight electronic tunes reminiscent of Daft Punk.

IF you're immersed in the dance, electronic or as we call it today, EDM scene, we all know how loved Guetta is on one side and how hated he is in the other.  My joining the contest wasn't to take any side but to simply "try" to at least be one of the representatives of the local electronic music scene in the Philippines. We all know how culture dictates that only the famous or popular ones can get the attention of Pinoys locally. Unfortunately, if you're Pinoy trying to make a name for yourself in the electronic scene, people wouldn't really bother to check you out because you're not famous abroad (American Idol anyone?). So I thought, if the so-called world's no. 1 DJ is playing, then it would be a "nice" platform to win the slot to get exposure to let people who go to the concert know, that there are also a lot of locally-made electronic dance music, and there are Pinoys playing them live! Idealist yes but ss simple as it may sound, that's really the main reason I joined. I'm a music producer and live performer first and I rarely call what I do DJing so just imagine how I felt trying to enter a DJing contest hehe Why there? Because it's a mainstream/pop crowd and it would be nice to also expose them to music styles/sounds/artists they won't even bother checking out because they haven't heard of them (like silverfilter haha I kid) But you get my point. So being able to play out originals and remixes of mine of artists I like and enjoy might at least plant something in their heads. Would it be effective? I don't know. All I know is, I tried to do what I can to push things a bit further and that is to try to penetrate that type of crowd by joining the contest... That is of course, if I end up winning. If not, nothing's lost really. I'd still be doing the same thing promoting and pushing for electronic music made in the Philippines like I've always done for over a decade now. But if I do win, then I'd do all I can to really make a mark not as a DJ, but as a Filipino Electronic Music Producer and live performer :)

Do check out of course http://www.facebook.com/groups/electronicamanila/ to support your local acts! :)

So if you're reading this and the only exposure you have to what dance music is is David Guetta on a Rihanna or Usher track, go try to explore more and learn about the greats from before like The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Armand Van Helden, and SO MUCH MORE. Don't be satisfied with the "dance" music the radio stations or the mainstream clubs push on you. You have ears and you have taste and most importantly, freewill, so use it and don't let anyone dictate what you should like just because it's popular. Find out more and you will discover a whole new world of music you might end up enjoying!

My Love For Music and Playing Music

Truth be told I studied to be a writer. Took up writing as a major in college focusing on creative writing. I saw myself writing for ad agencies or wherever I could use my talents. I also studied web design and graphics after college because at that time the net was exploding and it seemed to be the perfect career to take on.

Where am I now? Music.

Now I really didn't think I'd end up doing music full time. God just aligned everything that made me end up doing it.

Thing is, if music is your passion and music is your work, you'll find yourself seriously burned out looking for something else to do.

I've thought of things to do like photography, film, etc. and even if I'd still want to do those in the near future, it was just such a nice thing yesterday when I rediscovered my passion for music and just playing without thinking about work involved. How? I played the drums.

When I played the drums just to practice, I found that passion once again. I felt inside that feeling when I first played the drums. No expectations and just pure joy playing it. I wasn't thinking if I'd end up playing in a band, or if it would end up to be work. I just played and that was one of the best feellings I've had in a  long time. I even was at the brink of crying while playing Aurora by the Foo Fighters because I love that song and love playing that song. It was quite a feeling more into me just loving to play and loving music back when I was a kid because these days, as a full time musician, most of the times I spend doing or playing music is mostly related to work or career. But when I was drumming, I was at the top of the world. As cliche as it may sound, I felt free. Free from commitments, free from deadlines, free from responsibilities, just free.

I plan to practice drumming and getting back to it from now on. It's been a while and I'm just glad that drumming has always been there and it's welcomed me back with open arms.

Busy Boy

I'm terribly busy these days. It's a mixed bag really...

I'm busy attending to a lot of work arrangements, compositions and even songwriting for clients. At the same time during days where I need a break, I then proceed to working on my passion projects like the album mix of my band lovecore and my our electronic group Sinyma.

Seriously, I try to find things to do during breaks because ears do get tired. I know we may say that right after a conccert or something but in regular listening for mixing, we don't usually blast it but our ears still get pretty tired. It's interesting how we can say that when "hearing" or "listening" is such a normal thing to do but critical "listening" now that's another story.

I just really hope to finish these asap as its crunch time. Lovecore's album is due out before Christmas and the Sinyma EP's deadline is end of October so it's really gonna be a loaded "ber" month for me.

I'm just excited for the end result and I can't wait for all of these tunes to roll out of the studio into everyone's ears :)

Shirt Entry. First of Many :)

Img_20120913_130810

After more than a year of just "thinking" about doing it, I am finally pushing thru. With the help of my new budget android phone, i can finally do my ideas for the blog that needed photos :)

This is the start of the shirt entries. At first, i wanted to do it in a separate blog but after consulting my wife, I have decided to keep it here in the silverfilter blog so you guys can also see what other things interest me aside from music...

The shirt entries would just be random blog posts about shirts in my cabinet. I've always loved collecting them and as much as I'd like to have everything that i fancy, well, we just can't have it all right? So, I'll be sharing the shirts that perhaps you want to check out as well when you visit the stores where i bought it from. Some of course, if given as a gift, well then we'll just end up with a story, because i won't have any idea where they bought it hehe

Anyway, to start, i decided to do one that's music related since of course this is primarily a music blog.

This is ironically a would be favorite shirt of mine since I'm a heavy Reason user. This was a gift to me from my good friend DJ Brian Cua years back when he went to NAMM. Unfortunately, the booth had American sizes and xl to be exact so I need to have the shirt tailor shrunk to fit me. It's still awesome to have it in my cabinet though while it waits to be shrunk hehe

If you're familiar with Reason, the shirt also is obvious that it dates back to the old design and colors of the software and Propellerhead, which i guess makes this a classic hehe

I also have 2 Ableton shirts lying around here. I'll just look for them :)

Let's Hear It Direct :)

As some of you know, I offer some Music Production Tutorials to people interested. They learn the basics on what you need to produce down to actual production. Their final project actually is a release internationally so it's quite a trip for the students. Just hanging out in the studio and learning 1 on 1 :)

I've had a few students come and go and unfortunately, I only thought of this video idea after some finished already so I couldn't include them unless they're ok to come back just for the shoot. (hint hint)

So here are some video interviews I did for the ones who made it. As soon as the others finish, I shall add to this collection. They were shot on the fly and they didn't know that there was a video interview to come so they only found out right before. From zero background and knowledge, DJs, to some with a little experience as well. :)

Multitasking and Just Doing Everything...

As I wait for my video to upload, I'll take the time to write an entry. So multitasking it is...

But it's interesting how the video you may end up viewing later on was shot, recorded and edited by myself. It's nice to be able to know how to do those things but trust me, I'd rather have someone do it for me so I can focus more on making music than editing or shooting videos.

But I guess this leads me to this blog's topic... how we as musicians today tend to be everything for everyone... we make music, we promote, we market, we design our merch, we deliver our music to key people, we design websites, we blog, we shoot videos and edit them, and so much more.

I guess that's just it... Being a musician today simply entails being more than one. If you want to get yourself out there, read up and learn things that you can do other than music to help promote your act, or create things that can help get your name out there. Now I'm not saying pour time and money into it but try to at least have a basic grasp on things. It can help you immensely. If you ask me, I would LOVE to have a team of people helping me out. By the way, if you wanna help out, please let me know. I'd gladly accept the help at this point :) Going back to my point, it's nice to have that but it's also nice to be able to know how to do it when there are times that the people you rely on for certain things aren't available or cannot attend to it asap. This way, you can do some small tweaks to let's say your website, or possibly fix your promotional materials in social media, or even send out your press kit via email.

We live in a different world now. I would have loved to just focus on writing and creating music. But since I don't have that luxury, I am also thankful for the time and the knowledge that I have gained trying to do everything. It's fun too! try it!

The Mic has Arrived! :)

First off, I give glory to God for being able to provide for me to be able to buy this! :)

Now onto the mic...

I've long wanted to upgrade my mic for the studio. Not because the one I have sucks but because I know that it can be a HUGE help for the studio and for all the upcoming things I plan to record. I needed a good (great even) vocal mic and a very practical deal came my way and so I was able to swing for it.

It's a Peluso 22 251 which is modeled after the Telefunken. It's a tube mic so we can hopefully expect that valve warmth :) It came in this nice case and opening it is a sight of beauty. We have the power supply for the tube, the shockmount, the cables, and the mic.

I'm VERY excited to record with this already and I can't wait to finish all the things I have lined up.

This is a great addition to this little studio of mine for sure and together with my AT4033a, and a few other budget mics I have, I am just very happy to be able to fill up my mic "locker" for particular mic'ing needs... I wasn't actually looking but was just waiting and this happened so thank you, Lord! :)

Looking for a USB soundcard?

Here's something worth checking out...

97649_l

 http://www.amazon.com/RME-Fireface-UC-USB-Interface/dp/B002N12DM2

I just came across this while watching a Chris Liebing interview on his setup while doing his hybrid DJ/Live set and this is his soundcard.

I got curious because he said it has the lowest latency he's ever found on a device in its class so I really got intrigued!

However, when I saw the price, my dreams of getting one quickly disolved and then I understood why it can have the lowest latency... because you really pay to get it :) hehe

But if I had the money, why not!? Though for my live use or even in production, I pretty much can work fine with what I have and am pretty content with my current setup.

What I need more at this point isn't gear but TIME to work and finish tracks and have more consistent studio time for my releases and preparations for live shows :)

Doing My Little Part To Help

Manila-electronica-cover-small350

I remember when I launched my album Devotion in 09, it was right after Ondoy and what I did during the launch was to have all the proceeds of the launch sales handed to relief efforts/donations to help out our fellow countrymen. Fast forward to today, we have all, once again, experienced another great tragedy in our country...

With that, for the whole of August, I shall forward ALL sales of my new album, Manila Electronica to the current relief efforts for the victims of the "habagat" (since we don't have a storm name to call it) tragedy.

Donate here and get the album in return http://silverfilter.com/album-manilaelectronica.html

I just want to give a little something to anyone who wants to help, with the little that I have, which is my music, as something extra for your generosity. If you would take the time to read up about the vision of my album initially, it's all about raising awareness of Filipino electronic music. But this goes beyond that now. This is for all of us helping out our fellow Filipinos struck with this tragedy one way or another. I hope it raises awareness that we can help in our own way with the talents we have been blessed with.

It would be a huge blessing if we can all do our part in helping out. If you can shell out a little of your savings to give for this cause, then I hope this little album of mine can do its small part to give back as a simple thank you to anyone who would want to help the victims financially.

If you do not have money, then volunteer your time to pack relief goods, look for things at home you can donate, round up people to help. There are tons of things each person can do to help and I do hope we can all do our little parts as it can benefit HUGELY in the end.

God bless your generosity!

Where The Music Happens...

Been a while since I got to clean up and fix the studio. I'm telling you, having a kid can really eat up so much time... I'm not complaining though. It's a nice thing really. But since I got to clean up a bit, I took a photo of the current desk just to have a snapshot of it at certain points in time as I tend to jumble it up to find the best setup for me. This is temporary as I'm looking to have a proper desktop made so tom I'll be doing some measurements to make that possible. What I'm missing from this photo is a 23" screen which I want to buy if I get the funds for it. For now, this is it. This is where the tunes are created and realized :)

About the photo: Well, I don't have a DSLR and so I just my point and click cam which resolution-wise isn't as nice so I just fooled around with the effects from a web app and just had fun with it. This somehow shows how the vibe should be... some lights and the feeling that I'm in this place where I can make music to dance to :)

Post up your studio shots and let's see em!

Can you really produce on headphones?

Whether you’re trying to produce on the road or just keeping the noise levels down in your home studio, the idea of studio-quality reference headphones is appealing. Sharooz was a self-confessed headphone sceptic. Could Sennheiser’s HD650s convert him?

One of the questions I get asked most often by young producers is which studio monitors I’d recommend. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve been asked to suggest the best pair of monitors under £300 or the best for a small bedroom studio. Over the last few years, I’ve found that the standard monitor query is just as likely to be followed by a second question: Which headphones are best for production?

The bottom line is that until recently I’d never considered a pair of headphones, either as an alternative or to supplement a dedicated pair of loudspeakers. I understand that a lot of producers might not be able to make a lot of noise in their studio or might not be able to afford room treatment, but my advice has always been that a pair of decent monitors will outperform pretty much any headphones.

But, being on the road, working remotely, and noise restrictions have in recent years led to an explosion in the use of headphones, not just as a backup monitoring source, but as a primary reference in their own right. As I’ve found myself on the road more often, my need for a portable monitoring solution has also increased. Despite being sceptical about the idea that headphones could genuinely work for production and mixing, I figured it was time to give them a chance.

The headphone challenge

If the consensus on various production forums is anything to go by, the Sennheiser HD650s have emerged as the professional’s preferred choice of monitoring headphone. Tommy Trash and Skrillex have reportedly been using these cans as a primary monitoring source, and in Tommy Trash’s case producing his biggest hits using solely this very model.

“My initial reaction was that the 650s seemed to make everything sound pretty damn good. Too damn good. ”

As far as headphones go, the HD650s are fairly expensive, with an RRP of £399.99. That equates to a street price somewhere around £275, which may be a lot compared to most headphones but barely gets you into the price range of decent entry-level monitors.

My initial listen, straight through the headphone socket of my MacBook Pro, revealed a very hi-fi, pleasant soundstage for tracks I have known and trusted for years; too hi-fi for serious applications and, in truth, it was difficult to differentiate between the overdriven electro drivel and high-end platinum selling pop fodder. My initial reaction was that the 650s seemed to make everything sound pretty damn good. Too damn good. Great for listening but not so good for serious reference.

However, in the studio I connected to the Prism Orpheus via its own inbuilt headphone amp, and a different picture emerged. It became quickly apparent that the 650s demand a higher quality DAC and headphone amp than those built into the Mac. Through the Orpheus I felt confident enough to have a crack at a new tune using only the 650s. Choosing the right kick was easy. A bassline to match? No problems. Ping-pong delays, EQ tweaks, pads, sweeps, risers – I was making accurate decisions, easily able to reference against my other tracks and quickly get up to a point where I had a steady vibe going.

The A/B test

In the spirit of fairness, I A/Bd the 650s against a similarly priced pair of monitors, the £250 pair of KRK RP5s I bought my girlfriend for Christmas. There is little comparison. The accuracy you get from high-end headphones vs entry-level monitors is unparalleled. I tried and tried again to get up and running on the KRKs. All my kicks sounded the same, I could sweep the EQ from 20Hz to 200Hz and the only response I was getting was too much bass or too little bass. Frequencies muddled into reverbs muddled into mush muddled into a non-starter. I gave up and got back on the Sennheisers – quick, steady progress was being made again in no time.

After a while, I forgot I had them on. Open back in design, they were hugely comfortable to wear and relatively well built – I could imagine having these on for hours on end and not experiencing any pain or fatigue.

Most importantly, there’s no room correction, no nodes, no acoustic irregularities to correct. You get the sound of the drivers, and the drivers alone. The only significant flaw comes when attempting to pan sounds. The exaggerated stereo field of headphones means that stereo images don’t quite translate to speakers. It’s a weakness, but it’s small enough that I could learn to live with it.

David vs Goliath

Like many producers, I favour using more than one set of monitors to check mixes – in my case the Focal Twin 6s and my trusted Yamaha NS10Ms, which have served me without fault for more than a decade.

My main focus now was to use the Sennhesier headphones as a comparison source alongside the monitoring system I have tried and tested in the same position in the same room, day in, day out.

Anyone who knows me will know my love of the Focals – impressive but precise bottom end, sparkling tops, unrivalled separation and an almost three-dimensional stereo field. Where I’ve thought they lack definition is in bringing out the subtle distortion in the bottom-end which can occur when I heavily limit the mix bus in order to match the loudness of everything else out there. How did the 650s cope with the task?

“They're that rare beast - a smooth, enjoyable, listen but also a reliable, revealing, accurate reference”

I was amazed by the results. The kicks, which sounded muffled and distorted on the Focals, were quick and easy to fix. That rogue bit of compression or random EQ hike at 65Hz, the pad with remnants of cheap reverb lingering in the background I’d failed to spot, the vocal with the painful sibilance – there was an added dimension of detail, barely present on the Focals or NS10s, which jumped out and bit me on the ass with the Sennheisers on.

Level matching was a breeze too – unhindered by the mighty bass hype of 10″ drivers, turning down kicks and instead EQing them to punch through, made it possible to get things rounder, more defined and louder.

Conclusion

If you hadn’t already guessed, my scepticism about producing and mixing on headphones has been almost completely disproved.

There’s little to fault with the 650s,  the open-back design being the only potential problem. It’s part of what makes the 650s sound so good, but the downside is that sound leaks in and out much more than you’d find with as closed-back design like the HD25s.

In the shared Attack office, with the noxious drones of Gotye coming at me from overheard laptop speakers, it was hard to know whether I was listening to my source material or yet another out-of-key/time bootleg ode to crap Scandinavian pop. Keen to try something other than electronic music, I blasted out a few tracks from the Alicia Keys album, and when the Gotye listener fell silent, he looked over at me like I’d just felt up his mother.

They’re also not pretty. The earpieces on the 650s are incredibly well built but the plasticky headband and cheap gloss paint don’t look attractive and I can see the finish chipping or cracking over time. But these aren’t Beats. They’re not meant to be a fashion statement. I’d wear them in a studio, a hotel room or possibly a plane. Not on the back seat of a bus or around my neck at a gig.

In summary, these are an incredibly useful tool. They’re that rare beast – a smooth, enjoyable, listen but also a reliable, revealing, accurate reference – much like the Focal Twin 6s, which cost almost ten times as much.

Can you really produce music on headphones? Can headphones really compete with dedicated studio monitors? I never thought I’d say it, but the answer’s undoubtedly yes.

I've always wondered about this. Well, I've always recommended to use speakers but there are just times when it is needed. It's one of the reasons i got my Sennheiser HD25's in the first place but I was never convinced enough but this article got me curious. Good thing I'm not in the market for a new pair of cans...

Hoping To Gain a Little Perspective

Around 3 hours ago, I finally announced and made available my new album Manila Electronica. Literally, it took almost 10 years to make because it's a collection of different tunes I made over the years.

To get the promotion out of the way, you can head on over to my site and get the album at www.silverfilter.com

Now that it's out of the way, I'd like to take this opportunity to just share my thoughts and feelings about the whole release...

It's hard being an independent artist. I try as much to ask for help because I really don't want to be doing ALL of it but because I don't have much support, I'm left to do it on my own. I'm really not complaining. As tiring and stressful as it is, I have learned TONS of things in doing what I do after doing the music... and for those who know me, they know that I love learning.

Imagine, as an independent solo artist, I not only have to think about being an artist and writing tunes. Heck, that's only ONE thing from the WHOLE equation...

I have to be the sound engineer, then the mastering engineer... and so now I have a working master copy of the music right?

Then I have to be the webdesigner because I have to maintain a site.

Then I also have to be the marketing and promotions team. This is where it gets nasty... As such, I have to blast the news out to the virtual world. But it's not just about blasting right? I have to have some "text" to blast... and so now I'm the writer. I need to write stuff related to the release.

But what is a release without a cover? Well you thought right... I'm also the graphic artist and layout designer.

Then I also had to do some bonus materials so I also had to do the shoots, setup the cam, audio, etc.

I'm also the "secretary" when I need to send stuff out, communicate with people regarding the release, etc.

Then as it's released under my label, I also act as label manager overseeing everything, putting down my artist hat and looking at everything as a whole.

Phew... just thinking about the different roles exhausted me already hehe

Now why did I share this? Well, I just wanted to let you guys know how much all of it is really a labor of love. It's not like I simply whipped out a few tracks and just served it. Doing music these days is more than just making music I'm afraid.

I love music and I love the music that I do. I like to share it with the world and people know that I do. I have tons of free stuff over at my site. But of course, I also have to live and eat and so a little help is always welcome when people support the music that I don't offer for free especially this new album of mine. Honestly, it is priced to sell. I made sure it's of great value not only from the music offered but I'm hopeful that the whole package itself has added value in all the bonus materials available.

Now here's the tricky part... after all of these, I then took a step back. I gave it some thought and it made me think: what is the impact of all of this that I'm doing?

During the last days while I was spending hours in the studio before the actual release preparing and uploading, I just thought to myself, "maybe I'm the only one excited about this" or "maybe I'm seeing this bigger than it really is." Being an independent artist, one can't help but think about these things. It's really hard pushing and pushing especially these days when every musician/artist is clamoring for attention for their "next big hit."

I just couldn't help but think those things because honestly, I just don't want it to slip by. Regardless of whether it's an album of mine that's for sale or given away for free, I always feel the same thing for any release of mine: I hope it doesn't just slip by. What do I mean about this? Well, I just hope that A LOT of people are able to find out about my music and are able to enjoy it. I hope people get to share it with their friends and all so that the music reaches more ears. I hope it just doesn't get buried in the noise. Of course all musicians want this but I feel very strongly about it.

I'm not the type of musician who just uploads everything that I've finished. This is one reason this album took so long to finish. I'm my worst critic. I take time and MAKE SURE everything is OK with my critical self before I release anything and combined with all the things I wrote that takes to get a release out there, it now finally makes sense why I strongly hope that it reaches a lot of people. I go through the whole process with the hopes of creating something great or professional so that when people hear the music, it just doesn't entertain them. It becomes an experience for them... that the music serves its purpose... to be what it needs to be to the listener at that time.

If you bought the album or you plan to buy it, I'd like to say thank you very much. You don't know how grateful I am for your support. Seriously. It makes all the work and sacrifice worth it.

If you don't plan to buy it, it's all good. I'd kindly ask that you at least take the time to listen to it and perhaps share it with your friends to enjoy, and most especially to those who might be inclined to getting it. As long as it reaches more and more ears then I'd feel that all the work involved in putting everything together from start to the ears of people would be well worth everything.

Bottomline is, I make music to share to the world and that is the goal...  I just hope that the world is willing to listen :)

Sample Sites

A while back, I posted some sites I visit where I usually purchase some of my sound libraries. But those were just a handful (but helpful list).

I was going over my old browser bookmarks and I saw this and thought of sharing this with you guys. I often get asked where people can download free sounds or any sound for that matter that they can use for their tracks.

This page will keep you busy :)

Mastering The New Album

Just a little update. I'm wrapping up the mastering session for my new album and I'm so glad it's about done already. I just need to fix the album cover and I'll be preparing it for digital release!

I master my own tracks and as much as it isn't as advised to do so, it's good practice for me because I also need to hone my skills more for it. I enjoy the whole process even if it gets too personal for me that I sometimes revisit the mix then re-render again just because I want it perfect. But this time, I set limits on myself and I'm proud to say I'm almost finished. Finally.

This album, well, took maybe a decade to finish because it's sort of a best of silverfilter to some extent... but more than a "best of" it's more like a journey to the stages I went thru as an electronic artist and I'm pretty excited to share those tracks with all of you for the first time.

It will be available initially as a digital download only but a physical copy would be on the way as well.

The title is Manila Electronica and you can read more about the album in depth here (you can also show your support by preordering it there) : http://www.artisteconnect.com/projects/manila-electronica-cd

Anyway, a music video is gonna be crafted to support the release and I'm hoping to do a couple more videos just to get some images together with the sound. Anybody interested in making one, let me know! :)

That's it for the short update!

God bless!

Wallpaper Change

Picture_1

I just figured to post something random... I changed my wallpaper last night and it's not the best design but what I like about it is it's not your static wallpaper...

I decided to install a wallpaper clock. As You can see from the photo, it has the time and date! It's like a giant clock on my desktop and I like it. :)

Of course, I posted this to share the fun so get yours here http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaperclock/# and it's for both Mac and PC.

So you might say why I chose this design? Well, it's the design I could live with. The site has a paid option and the design I really wanted belongs to the paid service and I wanted to try out the WP clock first so I went with this.

A few considerations though... this eats around a few MBs or RAM so if you plan to use your computer for live audio applications, you might want to disable it for shows if you have the base RAM installed on your system.

Other than that, it's fun and at least I won't have to ask someone should I forget the day or date hehe

Enjoy!

Always a first Time for Ads

I've been doing ads for a decade now and I've been so used to the arrangements needed for it so it's a refreshing thing when I've been asked to do something simple... to use just an acoustic guitar for the whole bed/score.

I remember a few years back, I also had to do something similar but due to the producer's direction, I did an acoustic guitar piece using guitar samples from my collection and I just played it using a keyboard. This time, I was informed ahead of time so I was able to bring my acoustic guitar and do the music for the set of ads.

There's always something with recorded music against my usual arrangements using Reason where I go with MIDI most of the time. I can always re-edit, change or move things around because it's all MIDI data whereas with audio, I'd have to be as accurate as I can be since I don't have that much liberty when it comes to editing it compared to something I programmed via MIDI. But the nice thing about it is of course, you can't beat the real thing. We really can't try to "program" proper guitar playing including nuances of it. Yes there may be really good guitar VSTs or sound libraries there but nothing beats the real thing. I guess it's one thing why there's always room for a proper guitar player and I'm just SO THANKFUL to God that I'm able to play guitar if needed and as a music arranger, that's a definite plus as I don't have to get a session player to do the guitar parts. It's such a HUGE advantage to be able to do it myself. I'd imagine maybe if I didn't know then I may have not gotten the project and they may just have looked for a really good session guitar player.

So I again, thank God for the gift of music and that I am able to enjoy playing the guitar that it also extends to getting work for it :)

Bandcamping...

I've long signed up for Bandcamp but I never really found the time to properly set my account up with even just a single or something. I'm glad I FINALLY did.

You see, bandcamp is a really nice platform to showcase your music as well as be able to sell direct to your fans using their site. And not only sell but give stuff away for free. I really won't go into the details as it's best to visit their site to learn how AWESOME the site is.

The point of this post however is to let you guys know that as I finally found time to upload music there, it's best to let you know that I uploaded an exclusive album for FREE on it. Unfortunately, if you're on my mailing list, you already have this. But if you aren't then what are you waiting for? It's an 8-track affair which can you grab in the link below!

Why should computer musicians use hardware?

Media_httpcdnmosmusic_dasof

Here's a nice little article I read that's perfect for the times.

I've experienced playing with hardware synths and I've had a few come and go in my collection over the years. Unfortunately, I had to let go because they really didn't get any use from me (lucky are the ones who bought from me hehe) Seriously. I really didn't get to use any of my hardware synths that much.

Let's see...
I've had a Roland JD800 which was huge as a beast and heavy as a truck but it looked awesome in the studio with all the sliders.

I also had a Korg MS2000 which I think got the most use since I took it out for live performances back in the day.

I remember having a rack synth too! I also sold it though but it was my first Novation (A station) and I was pretty excited about it when I got it coz Novation wasn't available yet locally at that time.

There was also the Roland JP8000 which was one of my dream machines then and was blessed to own one after almost a decade but honestly, I really got it cuz I wanted one not because I needed one.

I also remember having a classic Roland SH02, which really had that huge analog sound, which ended up being traded for a bunch of guitar pedals hehe

The last one I had let go of was my Korg R3, which I even had shipped from the US. Unfortunately, it wasn't getting any use as with most of my synths and so I had to let it go.

There are also a few others which ended up having the same fate :(

Today, I only kept 2. My Roland Juno 60, which I'm keeping cuz it's a nice studio piece hehe and my Novation X Station which I'm keeping just because it's integrates nicely with computers as an interface plus the fact that it also works as a standalone synth! :)

People who are familiar with my tutorials and my DAW know that I'm a huge Reason user... well, it's really my MAIN DAW. And to be honest, I've got all that I need in it. That's why I never found any use for my hardware synths. I could have but I just felt that my workflow from inspiration to output was faster if I just worked exclusively inside the box.

If you did check out the article, it presents a nice argument, that pretty much sums up if we still need one in our setup. For me, I really don't need one at all. But I STILL want to get a Minibrute! But it's more of a want than a need because at the end of the day, we really don't need hardware these days but it's a nice addition to your setup should you feel the need for one :)

silverfilter live PA remix set - Palladium (free download)

Posting the audio only version since Youtube's been blocking my video for the remixes :(

Recorded during the 2nd leg of the Hennessy Artistry Club Tour on the 27th of April 2012. This time it was at Palladium in Makati, Philippines.

Unfortunately, my recording device couldn't include the mic's of the percussion player seen in the video since he was plugged into a different mixer :(

Track Teaser for my Other Sound

Aside from the usual house stuff and more electronic styles, I've been doing a certain electronic sound that's vocal-based and very far from the club sound I do most of the time. I've got an album's worth of this type of material and I'd like to give you a preview of the latest tune I made for this sound I'm doing.

Hennessy Artistry Club Tour Part 2

398255_354454324611822_112672245456699_991238_572346122_n

So it was Palladium this time and it was a different ballgame altogether.

This time, aside from having Artstrong and Kat doing vocal duties, we had Marcus doing some percs from time to time during my set. We even started an hour later than scheduled!

I actually had fun. As always, I'd have an hour set as silverfilter doing live electronic music then come our guest singers. Last time at Opus, I brought in more tech/house tunes but as requested, they asked for my remixes set for Palladium and I mixed it up last night just having fun with the remixes I did playing it live. I enjoy it because at the end of the day, I still play my interpretations of the tunes and in the style that I want. I did a lot of breaks last night and I loved it. I even had one guy telling me after the set that he heard some BT influence in my set... and there really was! I got into breaks because of BT so that was a really great comment from a listener in the crowd.

I also had remixes of tunes from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Adele, and more. We're planning to do another new tune for the next one for our set so that's gonna be in June 1 so stay tuned! :)

New Track Sampler - Loops n Hits

Here's an upcoming track of mine to be released under my new label Trike Records.

It's a housey tune with a tinge of electro house on the synths/bass with a driving pulse to it :)

I called it Loops n Hits coz I played around with loops n hits to make this than my traditional "make if from scratch" way of working.

Enjoy!

The Fun In Teaching My 1 on 1 Music Production Course

As some of you who follow my blog or have seen my updates, I do a little teaching on music production. It's quite informal in the sense that the environment is very casual. I'd like to think it's like when we were kids and we had to have some "summer lessons" on a particular skill or instrument. So for what I'm doing, I'd like to think it's a summer thing for learning :)

Aside from meeting new people and gaining new friends, which is one of the best things in doing this, I just find it nice that since I tailor my tutorials to the students' needs and requirements, I learn a LOT in the process as well and I then tend to dig back to things I've also set aside when it comes to genre specific stuff.

Some students of mine enrolled to learn more on songwriting, some for recording a band, some for dance music, some for chillout, and just recently, my new student is in to learn dubstep.

It's a fun thing to do and it really keeps me on my toes. As I share my knowledge, I then of course want to learn more to share with my students so I also do my own research for more of what they want to know so it's a really nice cycle of learning :)

I am looking forward to the future students and friends-to-be for those who would be interested to sign up one day :)

Bye, Nay... I LOVE YOU!

A few months to a year ago, a scary thought came to me... that one day, I would have to say goodbye to my Nanay. I didn't really give it that much thought because of course I didn't want her to go but also because I've always known her to be a very strong woman. Even at 77 she could run :) But it crossed my mind still and I was thinking how painful it might be should that day come or how much I'll be crying if she passes. I didn't know that the day would come way sooner than I expected.

Miss Leonila Camasura aka "nanay" was my yaya/nanny since birth. Both my parents were employed so we were left with her day in and day out when my folks would be out at work. She's from Davao and came to take care of me when she was in her 40s. She used to work as a saleslady then she started working as a nanny to some foreign families and she finally spent a long time with the Schott's, who were American missionaries. So we were blessed to have one of those yaya's who spoke english... with an accent! She was mighty proud of that and she loved that she was able to have that background to be able to teach us. She was no ordinary "yaya." I call her nanay because she is like a 2nd mom to me. I didn't call her nanay just because it was a nicer term. In my whole life 'til this point she really acted like a second mom to me. She was someone appointed by God to look after me and to show me love and affection on a different level.

She called me lots of names... but most of the time, it was Bodoy, Big Boy (coz I was a big baby boy), or simply "doy." For her, Bodoy meant love/affection. She called me that even til the last times she could shape her mouth to speak properly before she passed.

I am blessed. I am blessed because God blessed me with a Nanay whose happiness was to take care of me and love me. She would often say that she was not working for money but she was working for love. Because she really did. She didn't have the best salary working for us but she never left even if she had better offers. How many people can say that they had their help with them for 38 years?

However, she also felt sad somehow. She didn't want to go back to Davao to her relatives just because she "thought" that people would think and say behind her back that all these years in Manila working for us and she never saved anything... I would like to go on the record and shout it out to the heavens to you Nanay that I know why.

"You just don't realize how much you've given out to a lot of people in need that's why you didn't get to save."

You'll be surprised how many people come by the house to ask for food, water, money, help, etc... it wasn't because we had a lot to give but because Nanay was very generous. She'd use up all her month's salary (after buying her medicines, and a lotto ticket hehe etc) to buy food... "for people who would knock on our gate" as she'd say. I would always catch her giving money even to people who, unfortunately, were sometimes taking advantage of her generosity borrowing money never to be seen again :( . We had so many situations where she would even talk and explain to me a need of this new someone that she wanted to help but Nanay didn't have enough money so she was asking extra help from me. She was like that. Nanay was a giver. Period. she didn't even buy clothes for herself! Every birthday or Christmas, if she wasn't asking for clothes, she would sometimes just ask for money... that ended up being given away to bless someone...

In my case, she gave her whole life. She gave 38 years of her life to be with us starting with my older sister! So just imagine how attached I am to her. I even realized earlier talking with my wife, that I've known her longer than how I know my older sister since she also passed away when I was only 17.

Last November, she was all psyched up to return to Davao to visit her relatives there. We were all excited for her. Unfortunately, she slipped while preparing food and fractured a huge part of her leg that she was bedridden since. However, she was ALWAYS hopeful that one day she will get well and walk and carry my baby Olivia and sing to her the songs she sang for me when I was a baby. Even in her condition, she was still as strong as she was in her will and in her physical body. She would even show me that she can lift her body weight with her arms alone. With that, we then continued the plan to send her to her relatives and make sure she was able to spend time with her and help her out with anything when she gets there.

But all of it changed last Friday when I went to her room to check up on her and she could hardly lift her arms to eat. I felt something was wrong. I was informed that she didn't have any appetite the past days. I didn't know that it was going on for a while because she seemed very strong and when I'd ask if she was eating, she'd say she was. But seeing her condition last Friday, I knew something was wrong. I just felt that maybe she was just weak from not eating so I encouraged our other household help to assist me in feeding her from time to time so that she could regain her strength. I even told nanay that she needed to be strong quickly because I wanted to fly with her to Davao in a week's time to take her to her relatives. She ate FINALLY so I was very hopeful that a few more days of that would get her strength back and she can be on her way.

The next day though, I felt something was wrong. Her breathing was different. Nanay had asthma so I just thought that she might have been having a hard time breathing coz of it. I asked her many times if she was having trouble breathing and she said she didn't. I insisted that she had her asthma meds taken because I really saw that something wasn't right. Later that day, it was still the same so I again gave her meds. We had a long time together talking as I made sure she ate and I was helping her eat since she was still weak. By this time though, my hopes of her getting her strength back was in reverse since instead of being better the next day after eating, she seemed worse. I stood in faith and laid hands on her and prayed for her as the spirit urged me to. Even when I went back to the room, my wife woke up and felt the urge to pray.

Sunday came, and when I woke up and went straight to check up on her, she was eating and talking but the breathing was still "different" and so I decided to take her to the hospital for checkup because I felt this wasn't asthma anymore despite the fact that she was insisting that she didn't have any real difficulty breathing. After checking up on her and started making plans preparing to take her, everything went downhill.

I prepared and when I went back to her room, she was different. I talked to her but she suddenly became too weak to even make up the words right in conversation. I carried her to sit to prepare to carry her to the car and she even said "give me one minute to rest" as she tried to lie down after I sat her up initially. That was the last clear phrase I heard from nanay. When I sat her up again, she already seemed unresponsive. I then carried her quickly to the car and ran to my wife to tell her that it wasn't looking good. Up to that point, I just thought maybe she was dehydrated from not eating or drinking enough but it didn't seem right to me because I was trying to get her back to her feet the past 2 days already.

As I rushed to the hospital, I could see nanay from the rearview mirror. My mom was with me and we'd call "nanay" and she'd just say "uuhhh" to respond. What was quite heartbreaking for me was that her eyes seemed to be gone already. She was just staring into the sky intently.

When we got there, she even tried to utter the words "san tayo?" It wasn't clear but I knew she meant that so I told her we were at the hospital already. She was always very sensitive about her leg fracture because it hurt so I warned the nurses. But she didn't flinch at all even if the nurses touched that part. That's when I knew it really was getting worse. I parked the car as my mom went with her inside and the moment I walked into the ER, her vitals was almost gone. They told me her blood pressure was VERY low already, she didn't have corneal reflex already and she had renal failure already. She was gasping for air when we got there and after a few moments, she wasn't breathing on her own already and the nurses was breathing for her with a pump already. I didn't know what was happening and why. It all happened so quick. I was just talking with her earlier that day and she was very strong just a few days ago then suddenly this. The doctors and nurses then told me to prepare for the worst already because it really wasn't looking good. Long story short, she just made it in time but everything was failing internally slowly that we were just there waiting for her to pass away. I tell whoever's reading this... it is a feeling I hope you won't experience in your life. It is something you've never felt before that eats you up inside.

So we then headed to her room where we "waited" for her to be with our creator. But she still fought for a little more than a day. I went home to get some stuff but I hardly made it back. When my wife and I got there, she just waited for us. She was pronounced dead but with very little pulse she fought 'til I got there and her monitor even reacted when she heard my voice and cries and that was our final time together... I was at her bedside laying my head on her lap and embracing her and holding her hand. It was difficult but as I told her when she was first brought up to the room, I reminded her that she can now rest and stop fighting to live. Nanay was a real fighter and it was seen until she was gone. Last night, I told her it was ok to let go now and rest. That her Bodoy would be fine and that I'll be a responsible man to Bernice and Olivia. I told her that my younger sister would be fine also because she's now married to a loving man. I told her she can finally rest and be happy with our creator, which was what she was always asking for whenever she'd feel down. I told her that her dreams would be realized already then after a day of fighting, she finally let go.

Minutes after she passed, I felt a comfort of something inside like she was reminding me that with all my regrets of how I really hoped and planned for her to go to Davao and all, she was telling me, that she really wanted her last moments to be spent with her "alagas" me and my sister, plus her extended alagas which were our spouses.

For the whole night after she passed, the image I had was her nice smile in the heavens because my prayer to God even when she was still in the ER was if God will take her now, that God would make it extra special for nanay and to make her the happiest. I prayed to make her VERY happy because she deserves all the happiness Heaven can give after all the heartaches and sacrifices she made on Earth.

As the doctor reported that morning, she had a bad case of Pneumonia, which wasn't detected. Its infection caused sepsis already and poisoned her system making her internal organs give out slowly in the process. When we got there that Sunday, her left lung already collapsed somehow or wasn't functioning anymore from the Pneumonia. As I wrote earlier, she had renal failure already discovered when we got there and later found that her digestive system was next and everything just followed.

My beloved Nanay was pronounced (I'll rephrase it to "Happy with God") April 23, 2012 at 8:26PM but her system and reaction to my voice fought til almost 9pm.

"Thanks nanay for EVERYTHING.

Thanks for finding new toys for me or just about anything just to keep me entertained when I was a little kid... like putting roaches inside a sandwich plastic bag cuz I was fascinated by its movement inside. I realized later on in life that as a woman, it must've been gross for you to do it but you still did because you loved me.

Thanks also for finding ways for me to be able to enjoy things that were beyond my reach... like how we didn't have our own computer gaming system at home so you'd scrounge up anything like old tires, old bottles and even ask from people just to have something to sell so that you can give me money to go out any play nintendo at the shops.

Thanks for all the little riddles you taught me when I was growing up.

Thanks for loving our family and taking care of all our needs over the years with all your heart soul and might.

Thanks for even being the one to lend me money even if you didn't have much when I needed it when I was younger.

Thanks for ALWAYS waking up to open the door for me regardless of what time I come home... that even if I tell you not to, you're the one who insists that I wake you up. I will ALWAYS remember that.

Thanks for times where you always put our needs ahead of yours. I would never forget that.

Thanks for always being proud of me, my accomplishments and loving me through and through.

I love you 'nay! I will truly truly miss your voice, your laugh, your voice and your singing. I would never be the Cyril I am today if not for your role in my development as a person.

I will be forever grateful to God for blessing me with a nanay such as yourself, who would give anything just to see her 'Bodoy' happy.

I promise to let Olivia know when she grows up, that once upon a time, there was a special someone who took care of her dad and I shall tell her of all the wonderful things you have done for me.

Please say Hi to Ate, Lolo and Lola for me!"

Love,
Bodoy
