Why should computer musicians use hardware?

Media_httpcdnmosmusic_dasof

Here's a nice little article I read that's perfect for the times.

I've experienced playing with hardware synths and I've had a few come and go in my collection over the years. Unfortunately, I had to let go because they really didn't get any use from me (lucky are the ones who bought from me hehe) Seriously. I really didn't get to use any of my hardware synths that much.

Let's see...
I've had a Roland JD800 which was huge as a beast and heavy as a truck but it looked awesome in the studio with all the sliders.

I also had a Korg MS2000 which I think got the most use since I took it out for live performances back in the day.

I remember having a rack synth too! I also sold it though but it was my first Novation (A station) and I was pretty excited about it when I got it coz Novation wasn't available yet locally at that time.

There was also the Roland JP8000 which was one of my dream machines then and was blessed to own one after almost a decade but honestly, I really got it cuz I wanted one not because I needed one.

I also remember having a classic Roland SH02, which really had that huge analog sound, which ended up being traded for a bunch of guitar pedals hehe

The last one I had let go of was my Korg R3, which I even had shipped from the US. Unfortunately, it wasn't getting any use as with most of my synths and so I had to let it go.

There are also a few others which ended up having the same fate :(

Today, I only kept 2. My Roland Juno 60, which I'm keeping cuz it's a nice studio piece hehe and my Novation X Station which I'm keeping just because it's integrates nicely with computers as an interface plus the fact that it also works as a standalone synth! :)

People who are familiar with my tutorials and my DAW know that I'm a huge Reason user... well, it's really my MAIN DAW. And to be honest, I've got all that I need in it. That's why I never found any use for my hardware synths. I could have but I just felt that my workflow from inspiration to output was faster if I just worked exclusively inside the box.

If you did check out the article, it presents a nice argument, that pretty much sums up if we still need one in our setup. For me, I really don't need one at all. But I STILL want to get a Minibrute! But it's more of a want than a need because at the end of the day, we really don't need hardware these days but it's a nice addition to your setup should you feel the need for one :)
