Last Gig of The Year

409686_1742784865405_1712245215_900464_1408625946_n
(Thanks to Jezi for the photo)

unbeknownst to most is that I've declined gigs for Dec... the "peakest" of the peak in the season in our industry. This is of course due to Bernice being due to give birth mid December. I just decided to just lay everything down and just make up for everything next year. Priorities...

But I couldn't miss the Electronica Manila night for the 29th of Dec because we were doing it for a Cause. We had this to raise funds for the victims of Sendong and what better way to give of our time and talent than to play to raise funds to help people.

We also didn't have just music but we were also raising funds through selling anything like our CDs, Merch, etc to add to the funds we were raising.

Unfortunately, I played a wee bit too late that there were no people to buy the stuff I was selling haha I ended up giving a few CDs away to one of the employees of Saguijo who was into what I was doing. It felt nice having what I do be appreciated that he ended up getting 2 free CDs hehe He also told me that there were 3 guys who came to see me but couldn't wait any longer and left :(

Anyway, just to share, the last time I played Saguijo was a few weeks back and it was packed because it was the digital launch of Techy Romantics' new album. I remember tweeting back then that my set was bad. It really was for my standards. It was kinda all over the place. I guess I'm just too hard on myself at times. Funny thing was, tonight, I had no audience. Of course, I won't count the organizer, the performers, and the employees. There were a few people but I felt that I did a really nice live set. Waaaaaay better than the one I did when there were people haha wrong timing.

And so with that, I end 2011. A fund raising gig with noone during my set but ended up nice... makes me hopeful for 2012 :)

Using Loops Is Fine. Being In One Isn't.

Yesterday, I spent not 1, not 3, not 5, but 7 hours sorting out a driver issue with my audio interface. It was a real waste of time when driver installers of vendors won't work as it should. When I was around the 4th hour, I kid you not, I wanted to cry already. But I had to make it work because I was preparing for my January clients. I HAD to get it sorted.

Now I hope none of this happens to any of you. But if you do find yourself in a similar situation, I hope these small tips may help. If you do encounter some technical issues with your equipment, try these...

1.OFFICIAL VENDOR SITE : Your first move should be to visit the vendor's site and check out their links to perhaps software updates for your drivers, etc.

2. VENDOR FORUMS : Next is to check if they have a dedicated user forum for support or dedicated forums where their product specialists chime in for technical support. This is the quickest way you can get answers if you don't know where to get them.

3. EXTERNAL FORUMS : Now this is quite tricky but the way I end up in these is I usually do a google searches and words I used sometimes match words of other people who may have the same problem but decided to post it in forums they frequent. Don't dismiss these even if you feel the forum names seem quite irrelevant to the problem at hand. I find Reason problems solution sometims in Ableton forums or vice versa. Remember that a lot of people also have tons of software that they use for particular functions so they may have a Reason problem but their main software of choice is Ableton so they may frequent the Ableton forums more but of course there are other Ableton owners who have Reason so they may share knowledge there and find your solution there. But again, you'll find these via google searches. Don't try to visit other forums blindly trying to find solutions for unrelated software.

4. YOUTUBE : We tend to forget that Youtube has now become a Google search for videos since a lot of videos are used now for everything so you may find your solution in YT with a video to boot! Now that's easier coz you have a guide now!

Things to remember for software installation issues like drivers, full install, reinstall or uninstall:

- Sometimes you really have to uninstall everything from your system and I mean ALL of it. Like your computer should be free from anything related to the software. Imagine a fresh system before you installed any of your audio software.

- REdownload everything. Sometimes you need to get the latest updates. They update for a reason :)

- REdownload old installers. Sometimes if the latest won't work, you can try backtracking to drivers, etc that USED to work for your system. This way you can also isolate a bit which causes the problem.

- Think outside the box. One of the solutions I found for my problem that worked wasn't exactly the solution recommended by the vendor but if you know your way around computers then it's worth experimenting a bit if you dare :)

So there. I hope that helped a bit in case you find yourself in a bind.

God bless!

I Need This Sometimes...

Picture_5

Being an independent artist, we don't get the usual reviews of our tracks or even receive fan feedback if ever we do have some :) So it's nice to read something like this for the single I released under UK label Acidphonic.

I'm even more thrilled to find out that artists like Access Denied liked it! I mean, if you check Beatport now, he's on the #1 spot this week for Breaks so for someone like him to dig my tune, I'm definitely humbled! :)

How I wish I could get on the Beatport top 100 hehe

This Is Exactly How I Feel

It's actually the first time I've heard of him but as you'll see in the vid, he's toured the world playing.

One thing that I can relate with though is how he feels towards Reason. It's exactly how I feel. There really is somewhat of an emotional connection with it. No wonder I feel strongly about it and always promote or share it with whoever I get to talk to.

This is where I'd like to point out somethin to you guys...

We feel strongly about our software, in this case Reason, because we spent time with it. We got deep into it learning its ins and outs. We made sure that we could squeeze out whatever feature it has so that we could translate whatever we have in our minds into sound. This is how you can connect with your software.

The problem that faces new producers is the choices they have to make toward which DAW or software to use to write their music. From Reason, to Live, to Cubase, to Logic, and others, it sure can be overwhelming. But that's it. It's just overwhelming but there's always a CHOICE. Don't always take ones word for a piece of software but read up a bit. Visit forums or download a demo. What would work for me in terms of workflow would be long winded for you. What is fun for me might seem boring to you. What sounds good to me might sound crap to you. This is the case when choosing your DAW.

For a little example: I love Reason because it limits me with what it has and it squeezes out the creativity in me. I don't like to work in Live or Logic even if I have them both because I don't want to be bothered with the workflow as well as the overwhelming choices of VST instruments that pop in weekly. Yes, some VSTs may sound better and bring more flavors but I find the limit helps me focus more on creating than spending time choosing which instrument to use. But for others, they hate Reason because of that limit. They want their massive sound libraries, VST instruments, etc and there's nothing wrong with that. everybody has their way.

Bottomline is, find one that you love and connect with it. Once you do, ignore the haters (yes I'm talking to the FL boys). You're the one making the music so you know yourself best. In the end you'll be more creative AND productive than you've ever been before rather than forcing yourself to work with a DAW just because your friend or a magazine you read says it's "the best" or "it's the most fully featured."

What are you're DAWs of choice? Post away and mention your top features. You might just help others who are still searching! :)

Gearing Up For 2012

The new year is just around the corner and with my new baby out, it's back to business.

I actually put everything on hold on my end for December. A bit wrong timing to deliver a baby since it should be peak season for me but my baby's more important so I didn't mind at all. I had to decline a few gigs to make sure I'm there for whatever Bernice and Olivia needs. But as I've also discussed with Berns, next year, I'm goin full force with my silverfilter project.

I'm hoping to get my releases out more regularly. Possibly finishing my label as well. I've just been hard at work studying and learning about putting it up properly first and if it's even worth it before jumping into it because it'll also take some commitment to do something like that.

One goal of 2011 was actually to go out of the country and find some gigs. But since my wife got pregnant, I had to put everything on hold til 2012. I guess God's just creating the perfect timing for me. I dunno :)

So here's to looking forward to 2012. This isn't my new year's post yet. I'm just excited seeing that the baby's out already and I can finally slowly get back on the music saddle so to speak!

How To Get On ITunes

Itunes9icon

For a lot of musicians, getting on iTunes is one of those things before that somehow seemed like a dream. Everybody wanted in on it because the world was their stage and there were millions of people "watching" thru the iTunes platform. But in this day and age, it seems easier but a lot of people I know still ask me how I got on it. With this in mind, I'd like to share some ideas on how to get your music onto iTunes for distribution.

There are a few options I can think of and I hope these can help you on your way :)

1. The most obvious is to get signed onto a label - ok don't dismiss this first if you feel like getting on a label may be another huge hurdle for you. I know you're reading this because of the fact that you may want to skip that but bear with me here. It's not as hard to get on a label these days. I recently wrote and blogged on getting signed and even had a video done on how to get your music onto beatport which is somewhat related so you might also wanna watch that. With a little work put in, you may just find yourself on iTunes WITHOUT having to shell out any cash.

2. Get distributed - There are a couple of routes here so it depends on how you want to go about it...

I got into itunes via my account on Reverbnation. It's a music social networking site that has really great features. They have a distribution package that you pay for annually and you get a lot of analytics/stats that lets you know if you're creating an impact or even having people listen to your tunes. I like the stats that are free for any RN account and the instant payout updates you get from their sales reports is great. The only thing I don't like is the annual fee because a lot of the competition doesn't have that. Though in their defense, it's because you keep 100% royalties. But for an indie artist, I'd rather go with a percentage cut rather than paying upfront and annually for my album to be sold. But for the purpose of getting your music on iTunes and a lot of other digital stores PLUS the stats, this is a good option. I think this is the quickest and cheapest option so far given the pluses.

The other option is looking into its competition like Tunecore.com. Tunecore is actually the big gun in this game and you can look at their packages and page that they really mean business. You can also consider them if you're not into the whole social network thing of Reverbnation.

The last option is formal distribution... I know you may be asking aren't the above two distribution already? Are they informal? Well, it's more like a use of terms on my end. For me formally getting yourself distributed is more by the way of putting up a label or applying for distribution to companies who really handle label distribution. These companies may or may not charge upfront fees so take the time to look around and see which packages they offer fit your catalog if you're planning to put up a label or if you wanna sign up as an artist. One thing to note however, is that most take in labels and they sometimes seem like record labels themselves in the sense that they will really listen to your material first before taking you in for distribution because a lot of them also have some standard or focus more on a particular type of sound. You may be applying into some distributor as a rock band when in fact, they focus on dance labels. So be sure to do your research. This writeup is the first step so I hope this makes things easier on your part instead of just going round in circles.

It's worth looking into the following distribution companies that came up in my research :)

feiyr
believe digital
rebeat digital
kvz
bleep
baseware
ingrooves
ioda
labelworx

So there! I hope this little tutorial will help you on your way to getting and sharing your music with the world. If you have any question, feel free to post away :)

God bless!

How's Your Ear? Test Your Listening Now!

Screen_shot_2011-11-22_at_3

CREDIT

For almost a decade now, I feared for my hearing. Having played the drums professionally a few times a week for a couple of years made me feel like I may have damaged it. All these years, I prayed (really) for God to restore my hearing like that of a child's. Why? Well, working in music professionally now doing mixing and mastering stuff really need the best my ears can give. When I go out now in clubs especially rock joints, I always have my ear plugs on or at the very least a pair of folded table napkin in my ears to protect it.

Our ears can hear a certain range of frequencies and as we know, the animals can hear more high pitched ones. As we grow old, the range of frequencies we're able to hear narrows down a bit depending on how you took care of your ears.

Going back to my story, I never got around to having my ears checked and then I came across this site and did their test last night. I can't tell you how happy I was upon checking my hearing. The test starts from 22. I heard it starting at 18. For our everyday listening the higher ups are already high and it's really more piercing than pleasant.

Try the test out and lemme know which frequency you started hearing it?

Get Some Music Software Cheaper!

This is pretty specific but a lot of other products tie up with various brands so take this as you see fit :)

If you've bought some hardware controllers or other hardware products over the past 5 years or so, you may have noticed that it came with some freebie "lite" versions of popular software like Ableton, Cubase, etc. Some of the people I know actually have discarded these installer CDs just because they were "lite" versions or "LE" or limited edition versions... yeah sometimes it appears that it just came with your controller as a little add-on to make the purchase seem more than worth it. Truth is, it is!

For a real life example, I was one of those people who either threw out the installer or in my case, I lost the CD. I actually had to go online on forums to ask other people who may have some of their CD installers lying around because those my friends, are gold.

Not getting into exact figures but the Lite version of Ableton Live actually gives you around $100 off your upgrade to the full version! Neat eh!? This is what I did. Once I found someone who sent me his lite installer, I was well on my way getting the full version and that's how I got my copy of Ableton.

Right now, I actually had to dig up my old box of my NI Audio Kontrol 1 to look for my old Traktor installer because once again, it's $100 off to upgrade to the full version!

So there! Just a little reminder to all you guys and gals out there who may have ignored their humble lite installers in favor at looking at the full versions not knowing that they actually have money in their hands for a nicer and more practical upgrade path :)

So who's going to look for their old installers after this?

Looking To Rhyme?

side note: It sometimes gets hard thinking of what to blog about but I always fail to remember that part of it is just simply sharing anything that may be helpful to others and so I shall from now on just post random stuff that can be of help to anyone in my field of interest :)

Jumping in...

At times, the pressure of clients breathing down your throat can be an inspiration killer and when I'm tasked to write lyrics for something, I go visit some sites when my mind draws a blank. I figured that for any songwriter out there (or even if you're a poet) this site might help you out if your juice isn't there and you need to finish something quick.

Rhymezone and Rhymer

I use Rhymezone more coz it's easier on the eyes when searching for a word but you can try out both.

These sites can help you look for words to complete a set of poems or lyrics for anything... Don't also just go to these sites if you feel like there's no inspiration. Sometimes finding the right words can be a jump off point for inspiration as well and you can keep searching for new words even if you feel you're on the go already.

Hope that helps :)

Beef Up Your Reason Sounds Collection

Before anyone starts looking for Torrents, I'd suggest supporting the developers who spend time programming nice sounding patches for your use :)

Now to get on with the post...

Check out Reasonstation. It's an old site meaning it's been around for a while so the wealth of resources is vast as well. And to help you out, check out this link.

http://www.reasonstation.net/refills/browse.php?ft_type=rfl&ft_style=0&am...

Now this will lead you to refill packs you can buy and download to add to your refill collections!

If you are new to Reason, Refills are like zip files in your computer. Refills are merely a container for sounds/patches, that you can use in your Reason devices may it be a sound source or an effect. The onboard Refill that came with Reason are the Factory Sound Bank and the Orkester. Both are very capable to provide inspirational sounds and can last you for years just exploring what you can do with them. But if you find yourself looking for more sounds, then I'd suggest going on a Refill hunt. There are a lot out there that are free and some of the paid ones are also worth the money. Just make sure it fits your sound and you feel inspired listening to them for your own use.

There are Reason haters and even users who say a track sounds "Reason-y" which I think is because they're so used to hearing sounds from the factory sound bank. It's not a bad thing but perhaps some people just don't tweak anything or try to explore more of the possibilities. For the more adventurous, this is where Refills come in and this is what makes your track indistinguishable from those not made in Reason.

Enjoy the hunt!

Revelations. Reason. Refill.

Revelations.

It's funny as a blogger in progress, I often think I have to come up with something really great and allot time to plan out and think and write. I later realize that I just have to post something relevant and can even be really short at times may it be a note, text, tutorial, lead, or even a video. I guess what we bloggers in progress fail to realize is that we don't have to overthink things. Posts can be simple but may very well be helpful to those who read it. So don't feel pressured. It's just now also that I realize I have to loosen up LOL :)

Reason.

Well, adjusting to Reason 6 is a blast and I've been loving the new devices from the Pulveriser, The Echo, and The Gator. All of which I've been using a lot lately in my productions and work-related tunes. I'm also loving the audio transpose function. Really handy for all the off tune singing that I need to fix for some projects I'm handling hehe So far so good. I'm still observing the CPU usage though as a lot have reported that R6 bring some heavy strain on the CPU compared to R5+Record which R6 is a combination of. Let's see.

Refill.

And of course, as part of just posting things that can possibly help out, check this video out. It's quite inspiring :) I've also purchased the patches of this guy and they are AMAZING! Most of which have found their way in a lot of my productions for the past months both personal and work-related!

Check this video out!

An Expensive Problem...

Last week was a hard blow for me... a very hard one.

Being my busiest season, my stress spots were showing, was having a hard time sleeping, and everything that usually came with stress. I was preparing for a final stretch of clients that needed their music and I had until the end of October to finish them.

30 minutes before one of my clients came by the studio, my computer simply turned off all of a sudden and wouldn't turn on anymore. This was a few minutes before they arrived driving all the way from QC. I really felt bad. I wasn't worried about the files since I've had my fair share of crashes back in the day so I'm used to backing up. My problem then was the day after...

I had a client fly in from Germany to work on 12 songs I made for them and his schedule couldn't be moved. There I was, computer-less. My mind was floating in despair, I literally felt numb all over.

I had no choice but to rush to the service center the very next day and have the computer checked and fixed because by that time, I had less than 24 hours before the client came in. Unfortunately, they told me it had to be left for dignostics and repair for 7 days. By that time, my mind was spinning already.

Long story short, I ended up buying another computer on the spot. As my agent was helping me out with repairs, I ended up telling her what deal I could get for a new laptop. She advised against it because she felt bad and that it would be a waste for me to get a new one when the one I bought just 2 years ago will be released back in 7 days.

I had to make a business decision and I got a replacement.

It's hard and once again, a computer crash made me realize how my livelihood can depend so much on a piece of technology. I miss the days when I was a professional drummer and I could just show up at a show with a set of sticks and myself and I'd end up taking home some cash. Now, as I run my studio, I rely on computers to deliver my music products to my clients. It was a hard lesson to learn but I needed a backup computer. Don't get me wrong, I do have one but as time goes by, computers age and my original backup was showing its age in terms of performance. Ironically, when my Mac crashed, my PC backup laptop was the one that saved me that night for a deadline I was meeting for a TV ad. It was struggling but I was glad it got the work done.

People are asking me now what I would do with another laptop when my current one is very much still capable. Well, as the computer brings in the money for me and now my family, I have to be more responsible and have a proper backup computer. My wife may not agree much because of the cost but in the long run, it's for something that in the end supports us as well. I was telling her before getting it, that if we don't get a new computer, we can't get the money we're expecting as payments for some music I was working on and that would be worse.

I'm just so thankful to God for being there for me. I know it's a struggle seeing that I have to pay for a new computer but I have peace in my decision and I know God will provide. It was also a blessing that that night, a friend shared this thought with me... we work so that we can provide but with God, it's He who provides so we can do the work He has set for our lives and that spoke to me. I know that music is the work God has for me where He can show himself strong in what I write and produce and that in those pieces of music, He is glorified because He was the one who blessed me with the talent to make them. I know I need to work to provide for my family but with what happened, God assured me that regardless of my situation, even if I was short with cash, He will make a way to provide for what I need to continue to make music and provide for my family.

Thinking of taking my 1 on 1 Mentoring course?

I wanted to hear from my current crop of students taking up my 1 on 1 course and here's what one of them wrote. Thanks Niko for taking the time to give some feedback :)

"I never imagined when I started this course that I could come up with a track so quickly. I was able to create a track that sounds pretty good 3-4 sessions in! I also gained a world of insight into the nuances of production that I would have probably spent years figuring out on my own. Silverfilter's course is a perfect jump-off point if you've always dreamed of creating your own tracks!"

We're only halfway through and most of the guys taking the course have been well on their way creating their tunes from scratch programming in drums, playing in bass and keyboard/synth notes! Very happy and proud of them :)

Interested? http://silverfilter.posterous.com/learn-to-make-danceelectronic-music

The course started out focused on dance music but the differences in musical styles have not been a limit in the course as we discuss the principles and foundations of music production in general so if you're not into dance music but are into downtempo, DnB, dubstep, or if you're simply a songwriter wanting to create your own back up compositions for your songs, you are very welcome!

Reason 6! How to Update

Reason-6

Thank God for the Pay What You Want Scheme of Propellerheads for the release of Reason 6 for duo owners like me! It was a good move of them since it felt quite unfair that I bought Reason then Record then bought the upgrades and I'd have to pay the same price like all of the people who didn't even bother upgrading from older versions and not even getting Record so it's a fair move and one I gladly grabbed.

I'm also thankful to God that I didn't experience the update woes of people as the forum has been filled with various issues in updating for other users so getting to update swiftly in my case was a real breather. I was hesitant of doing the update immediately at first since I was in the middle of a project but I guess I was too excited.

Unfortunately, Installing Reason 6 automatically renders Record obsolete. I can run Record but not the same as when I had Reason 5. Now it's just Record so all the things I made inside Record with Reason needs to be reopened and re-saved inside Reason 6 now. Bummer. That's the only negative I can see from it but it's a minor thing.

For those who haven't updated yet, the process is smooth. Just head on over to the props site then pay what you want. Don't feel bad if you can't pay much. They offered a dollar minimum so it's up to you. Don't feel pressured especially if you don't have the money to splurge at the moment. Just thank them if you get it low and buy a Refill from the prop shop later once you save up some money :) Once you've decided, you're led to the checkout page and it's self explanatory from there. I paid paypal so it's your choice if you want it thru paypal or Credit Card. Then after payment, wait a bit and you'll get your invoice and confirmation in the email. Head on over to your account section in the props site and you'll see now that there's a Reason 6 license in your products already. Now if you haven't yet, download the installer (full or demo is the same so don't worry about it). It's a huge file so download will take time. After completing the download, just open the installer file. It will ask you to drag the reason folder into the application folder. It will ask you if you wanna replace the existing one then just select replace and go for it (make sure you don't have files in the Reason program folder!). After that, you can now open the Reason icon in your application folder. It will then work in the background to manage the license online and to configure your ignition key. You'll be asked to restart but after that, you're good to go!

I've just been too busy lately with tons of work that's why I haven't experimented on the new devices, the expanded soundbank, etc but I'll give you an update soon!

Another Addition To The Studio

27092011237
Truth be told, before I renovated the studio, the first thing I bought in my excitement was THE studio wall clock. I even got the better model that was silent and you didn't hear any ticking. Unfortunately, the one I bought was damaged and was never used. When the new studio was up, it didn't fit as well. Even my designer (Bernice) didn't want any wall clock hanging around the studio. And so it's only after more than a year that I finally got a replacement. I've been wanting this for months but it's just yesterday that I got to finally purchase it! I'm so happy!

Best to have a little clock for you home studio so that you're aware of the time and date even if you have your little clock on your computer. If you have clients from time to time, it can be very helpful to monitor time especially if you try to charge per hour :)

The clock I got when turned off looks like a block of wood but springs to life when plugged in :) Got it from Dimensione and they have different shapes and sizes if you're into getting one.

OK I'm Back...

Back from a week off to attend my grandma's burial, I'm back bringing you whatever's up in my side of the world.

This time, I've decided to share a recent project I did.

This is the My Rizal mini Jingle for an ad that they have for their essay writing contest campaign.

Enjoy!

Because I Have Emotions Too...

I'm posting something more on a personal matter today so sorry there's no music related topic for now.

Since I got here at my grandparents' house, I've been holding back my tears and stopping myself from breaking down. As some of you may know, my lola (grandmother) passed away and it's been hard for me... for all of us. I just found it hard on my part to even see her coffin... much more to see her lying down inside it so until now, I haven't looked at all. I just can't. I don't think I can take seeing her in that state. I don't want that image burned inside my head. Maybe later before she's taken down I may look but I don't know yet. It's just really hard. I have so many memories of her that I don't want to add a negative one wherein she's lifeless in a coffin. But then again, maybe after writing this post, I may have enough strength to do so. I don't know.

It seems like I'm just waiting for her just like any ordinary day here where she's seated outside the patio in the morning or afternoon or hanging in her sari sari store where she's all powdered up with baby powder up to her neck plus a healthy dash of perfume, while humming some tune. Or if she see's me straight from bed, she then asks the help to set up the table for food. Good times. I'll always remember her also in her seat at the dining table with the whole family around her.

I will miss her laugh.

She had a hearty one.

I will miss her laugh.

I Will Miss You Lola!

As I hold back my tears typing this, I say farewell to my grandmother whom I love DEARLY. The family always says I got my humor from her and I'm sure anyone who came to know her will say the same. She's a very funny lady and she has filled the lives of everyone around her especially the grandchildren with a life full of laughter.

I will always miss her laugh and her good old stories over breakfast lunch and dinner. I shall miss her sitting in front of her little sari sari store just hanging out and greeting everyone she knows and the regulars.

She was a very loving grandmother and a person with a very kind heart. She has put a lot of our help into school and even adopted a kid to help her out. She has always looked out for everyone and since my grandfather died when I was really young, she was both grandpa and grandma to me for my dad's side.

It is hard for me to think that she's gone now because I always look forward to seeing her smile and hearing her laugh whenever I fly out to Davao and now that she's gone, I'm afraid the house will be very empty without her. Things will never be the same.

As selfish as it may sound, I wasn't able to fly out in her last days because I didn't want to see her suffering. I wanted to keep the great memories in my head as it is and not remember her in bed dying. I was beside my sister and my grandfather when they passed and I didn't want another bad memory of a loved one lodged inside my head :(

I am just thankful to God that she left in peace and not in pain. She passed away 6:45am

To close this entry, I leave you with photos to show you who she is to me...

Dsc04068

Here she is smiling for the cam

Dsc04067

And here she is fooling with the cam that she didn't want any photos taken.

I will miss you lolafilter! I love you and will always be thinking of you!

Beating Deadlines

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

If you're like me at this point in time, I'm struggling to finish tons of projects before the month ends. With that, I have to organize and set which ones to prioritize to keep my head in check.

Here's what I do and maybe it can also help you out to line up which is which...

Of course, I first sort it out by deadline. That's the number one rule. There's no use in being organized if you were skipping deadlines.

The next one after you've sorted out which has the earliest deadline, is where you pick out which is the difficult ones to finish and the easy ones... group those together.

Now this is where people may have varying approaches...

You may choose the easiest to finish just to get things out of the way and finish ahead of time and so that you can focus later on the harder things you have to accomplish. I sometimes take this route. At the moment, I am!

The other option is the reverse of it. Try to finish the difficult ones first so that it's also out of the way. This way, you're left with the easier ones, which you can finish in no time.

Of course there are a few tradeoffs but it's up to you how to manage them. If you do the easiest first, you'll have enough time to work on the difficult ones because you finished quickly AT FIRST... the problem is if you run out of time since you were working with the difficult ones right before the deadline. On the other hand, if you do the harder ones first, you might run out of time also or you might do something rushed if it eats up your time initially.

For this particular project I'm working on now, I did the easiest ones first so that I won't feel too tired or burned out working on something difficult. That way, I'll have enough inspiration for the difficult batch. But that's just me. Other people feel the reverse wherein they did the hard ones first so that their mind can breathe a bit after.

Either way, it's helpful to take a step back and look at the big picture to prioritize and do what you can to maximize the most of your time and effort. It's hard to get inspiration for music projects as it is, so it's best to sort them out and choose accordingly!

Music Burnout

Mban1420l
It may be your boss or your client, but pressures can mount if you're not maintaining balance in your music-making and just taking in project or just giving deadlines that are impossible to meet just to impress.

If you have a huge project with lots to finish, allow time to breathe in between and tell your client dates that you factor in rest time. I should know since I live and breathe music-making. It's my hobby and it's my passion but at the same time, it's my work. Sometimes, I may admit, I feel like i'll be burned out with music and I'm rushing to find something to take me away from it for a while just to keep me sane. While i'm looking for an alternative hobby, I go and watch movies.

What do you do to rest or take time away from the pressures of your work or music-making if it's your job?

It may be common knowledge that we all need to REST but how many of us really do? How many of you really take time and consider getting away for a bit to clear your mind? Because sometimes, it can do more damage than good if you just keep going and going. You won't be as productive and you would've have wasted more time trying instead of just resting a bit and getting back fresh.

There will always be the temptation once you do rest or take some time off wherein your mind says, "you could do more if you're not doing this, you know?" and it will bug you. But don't let it get the best of you. Sometimes, we will really think how "unproductive" taking time off may be but at the end of the day, you'll realize how bigger of an help it was compared to just working your mind off until you have nothing else to give.

So going back to movies, that's what I did. I know that there are things I needed to finish. But I needed to rest over the weekend to prepare myself to dive in headstrong into the week to finish a ton of projects lined up for the week. I could've started one or two over the weekend but I felt it would be pressing it and just making myself into a music "machine" rather than just resting and getting all inspiration and creativity built up over the weekend to explode once monday hits.

Rest, my friend. Rest.

Cheap Quality Plugins

Ok so in the interest of sharing more bargains, here's a name I just came across recently and surprisingly, their products have been getting really good reviews and more importantly, the plugins are very cheap!

So if you're looking to add to your library, check them out. Their EQs are the ones taking the limelight so you might wanna start with those.

Keep At It

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Frost

I sometimes need to tell myself to keep at it as well since I also find myself questioning if this music thing is worth doing given the responsibilities i have as I get older. Of course it is. But sometimes, we need that push...

I won't say I've achieved the succes I have wanted as an artist but I believe I'm getting there slowly. I may also sometimes feel that there have been years where I just wasted time not doing anything to move forward to achieve the dreams that I have but I realize that things take time and as it was mentioned in church, "preparation time is never wasted."

To be honest, at this point in time in my life, I also feel that I wasted some years. I think at my age, I should be doing this and that already and later find myself asking where I went wrong or what I did not do. There are a million thoughts trust me. But I keep at it. I keep at it even if I have tons of negative thoughts in my mind about pushing forward. I keep at it even if I feel that I am the only one who believes in myself (but that's the most important thing actually). I keep at it not because I don't have a choice but because I love music and the ability to make and share it.

I honestly wanted to find myself at my age being able to make and play music that it was enough to support myself and possibly a family. But it's not. I need to work hard also to at least help keep my passion for music-making using technology provided for.

I guess not being where I imagined myself at this time is one of my insecurities and it sometimes gets the best of me but I soldier on. Things that I was hoping to happen 5 years ago, are just starting to happen now. I may be frustrated thinking about that but the good thing is, I am realizing the fact that it already happened and it's not just some unattained dream. The key here I guess is STILL taking steps FORWARD and not just standing on the little that we may have have achieved and calling it quits once we felt that things aren't going nowhere anymore.

You may be struggling with your very first composition. You may be struggling with your very first album. You may be struggling with your very first loop. The key now is to move on and not let those struggles affect your passion to make music or do whatever it is that you love doing. There may be delays and as you've read in the previous paragraphs, those are things others go through including myself. Just take steps to move forward and you'll find yourself with new challenges that will help you get closer to your dreams. Just be patient AND consistent. You may have some lull time but remember to move once you see yourself in a static state.

I am still off to my dream. I hope to get there soon but for now, I'll do the best that I can in the now and tomorrow will take care of itself.

Sampling and Reason 5

Picture_5

This is an actual screenshot of the sampling in Reason 5 on one of my projects.

To be honest, I really didn't think I'll be sampling anything since I got R5. With all the Refills i have and the audio recording in Record, the sampling function was just an add on for me and I didn't feel I would get any use for it.

I'm working on a project for a client now and they require a specific vst plugin to use. Since Reason doesn't allow 3rd party plugins, I had to resort to rewiring it with my other DAWs. My choices were logic, ableton, or Maschine since all 3 of them can host vst's. I initially ended up using Live. I'm most familiar with it so I chose that. But to rewire it means I should be sequencing inside Live as well which I find time consuming for me since I work fast in Reason and I don't want to be switching windows.

So what did I do?

Well, using soundflower in mac, I routed the outs 3-4 of Live and into Reason. Now with that, I routed the 3-4 input of Reason into the sampling inputs. So now internally just using my computer, I can now sample/record any VST into Reason and Record. Now it somehow adds a psuedo vst functionality inside it but recorded.

For my needs though I had to sample some loops and hits so to quicken the process, I'm using Kong and just sampling straight per pad. It's a fun process which reminded me when I was still sampling into my hardware boxes before and using a dial to trim and such. hehe fun times. I also used kong since I can add on effects straight up per pad so that's also a plus.

With the ease of software these days, sampling is waaaay too easy and if you have lots of sample sources, then you can definitely build a nice sample bank for use in your productions.

Try it out :)

First Kick

739019356

Ok this entry has been pending for way too long now...

I was so psyched the first time I felt our baby kick. If you fathers haven't reached that point yet, prepare for a real shocker... well, not really. It was just a really nice feeling.

Imagine, your first connection with your baby...

So there I was making music in bed on the computer and Bernice goes "feel my tummy!" and the moment I set my hand on her tummy, the baby gave a really strong and surprising kick. It wasn't one of those little kicks that you feel a little push. It was one edgy and strong one and I'd like to think that our baby knew we were connecting for the first time and he/she wanted to make his/her mark properly with a nice strong kick saying "Hey dad, feel this!"

And so it was that from that moment on, you'll be able to feel the kicks once the baby's up. It's a fun feeling. Don't get frustrated at times when suddenly it's daddy trying to feel the tummy and the baby suddenly stops. It always happens to me as well. Just wait it out there's always time to feel it.

Just make sure you make it a point to feel it even once before your wife gives birth.

Make that first connection :)

Torn Between Software...

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/MainPhp.html?NewsDisplay.php&Id=3271

Ok guys, you still have 7 days to make it.

I jumped on it really for the studio than for myself since I know God will be pouring in clients really soon so I took it.

I mean, 3X1 group buy? That's really worth it if you get the higher priced offerings since you in turn get the same value in two other products! Ok I'm sounding like a marketing guy already...

I'm just excited because I finally got what I wanted whereas yesterday, I was torn.

I ended up getting T-Racks 3 Deluxe and got Amplitube 3 full and Total Workstation for free. I think that's a pretty sweet deal. It was an easy Php40k worth of software gotten for free. I thought Amplitube would be a nice addition to my studio arsenal especially for guitarists who may require it one day and of course T-Racks as a nice add on for my studio services since i offer some mastering and some plugs on it can be used to add to my mastering chain. I was torn between getting Total Workstation though and the Amplitube Fender edition. I wanted to get the Fender edition since I love Fender but the total workstation was twice as expensive and since I was getting it for free, i opted to get the more expensive one so that I can just end up spending less should I decide to buy the Fender edition of amplitube. Total workstation has over 28 gigs of sounds spanning various samplers form analog synths to orchestral stuff so I believe it's worth it.

After I did my selection of software, I felt pretty happy and content about my decision and I just wanted to share the news with you guys in case you wanna get some new software at a bargain. You still have 7 days which is enough to make it so jump in!

:)

Native Instruments Maschine Mikro and iMaschine?

After hitting a wall today with nothing to post, here comes Native Instruments with a surprise shocker. The Maschine Mikro and the iMaschine app for iPhone and iPad!

I'm sure you can google specs and reviews but of course, seeing it's a blog, I'd rather share some thoughts about them than just do a rundown on features :)

Maschine-mikro

I was quite excited to see how SIMILAR the Mikro is to the full version. I own and use the original Maschine and it really is something. With its limitations in live use, It's pretty exciting to see Mikro and think about the possibilities. I'm hoping that it can be used alongside the original Maschine so I can have 2 running at the same time... I'm getting excited just thinking about it. But I'm not in a hurry at all to get one. It's just nice to think about it but I doubt I'll get one. The Maschine and APC40 alone is too much already to bring to a gig so let's see. For you guys who have always wanted to get the Maschine but have been turned off by the price, I think this is a perfect way to jump in. With everything THE SAME software-wise, it's a bargain. And trust me, the sound bank alone is worth the purchase :)

2_guis
Now iMaschine was something I was really surprised to see! Out Oct 1, this little app seems to be something to watch out for. If you own an IPad or IPhone, this one's worth the asking of $4.99. It's got a very limited soundbank but for some of you who just want something to play with and tap into to make some music on the go, I feel it's a nice addition to your music apps.

So there, some surprise I myself didn't see coming! Thoughts?

Limited Music-Making

42-18350115

CREDIT

I remember years ago, I wasn't using Reason then. I was using Fruity Loops (FL Studio today) and I was happy with it. FL was what got me into this whole music production thing and I loved it dearly. But when I got introduced to plugins and such inside FL, I was floored and overhwhelmed. With all the choices available, I found myself exploring and exploring and exploring and exploring and exploring plugins. Notice I didn't say I was making music? I was overwhelmed by the choices and the possibilities, that I got stuck doing that... exploring. I found my music-making time would be eaten by just listening to what's out there. Fast-forward to today and that's one thing I loved about Reason.

Reason prides itself in being a closed system. This makes Reason limited in a way since it can only use its own racks/modules to create music. You're limited by what it had and you'll have to "make do" with whatever they included in any update. For me, I saw this as a plus rather than a minus. With the limitations set by the software, I now had to learn the whole thing from the inside out and squeeze the juice out of it if I was to go get a particular result I wanted. This taught me how to program and how to get the most of what I had. Now, I wasn't focused on looking for that "perfect synth or sound" because I was busy making music because if I was looking for something, I had to tweak the synth to get that or try to approximate sounds close to what I'm hearing. This trained me and kept me focused. focused... I think that's the word.

Now you may be using a different DAW like Logic, or Live, or Cubase and those are great! You may even have dozens of expensive plugins and that's great as well! The point of this post is not being distracted by all the options out there. We can be MORE creative if we limit ourselves and work with what's there, because there are people who spend more time looking for the next new thing than making use of what he already has at his disposal.

How can this benefit your music-making? I know and heard a lot of people say that if only I had this or if only I had that gear, I would make "better" music or my songs will improve. Truth be told, anyone can make music with a little money saved up. You don't have to dive in and use up a lot just to start getting into music production. You can get very basic and useable gear and start from there. Learn mic placement with a simple mic or hone your skills at mixing with the default mixer and effects of your DAW. Know how to tweak the default effects in your DAW and get to know them that you can get it to sound close to things you're after. There are a lot of things you can do.

Bottomline is, put some limitations in your music and you can get back to being creative.

I read in a forum the other day that "A fish can be more creative in a fishbowl than in the ocean." If you think about it, it's quite funny but it makes perfect sense. I can imagine a goldfish swimming all day in a bowl with water and that fish has his imagination to keep him sane as it dreams up world upon world per day or imaginary fish perhaps? Whereas if it were in the ocean, he has all the wonders of the waters and all the fish he can cross paths with and he can explore all he wants.

Coincidentally, I also came across this site the other day while surfing. Download this guy's free ebook. It's VERY related to my point and expands on it as well as suggests some gear you may want to consider to start with and develop your skills at. www.recordingrevolution.com

So there, I hope you learn to put more limits on your music making and you'll soon reap the benefits!

Student Thoughts on My Music Production Sessions...

I am happy to share some review from one of my students. We've only gone through 1/4 of the sessions and you may read below that he has picked up a lot so far! He signed up for the class without any prior knowledge on electronic music production so it's a blast readin this as the teacher :)

"So far our sessions have been totally awesome. So far, you’ve been able to share or teach the following stuff:

·          Knowledge on Reason (How to use, shortcuts, etc.)

·          Tips on hardware to use or buy. Even on where to buy them

·          Sessions were really relaxed and informative; I could ask any question about music.

·          After 3 sessions, I can already create simple songs. I already uploaded 1 song in Souncloud.com right after the Dr. OctoRex session hahaha!

My expectations were met as of now. I believe all of them will be met as well J Because I think after you teach about the sequncer, I’ll be more ready to make my own sounds.

Bottom line: sessions are really fruitful and worth the money.

My Recording Studio's New Secret Weapon

01092011231

I remember a year back when I went out to buy studio gear for recording. I made a list and went around and I thought I had everything I needed. I really wanted to get everything in one go so that I won't miss anything and have that peace in my mind that I'm all set up. I thought wrong...

What I missed out on was that I forgot to get myself a music stand. I never realized how important it was until I had a recording session and the vocalist didn't memorize the lyrics. I was so used to thinking that vocalists should have memorized (because they should) their songs but I failed to think of those suddent songs singers come up with... and of course I later on realized I could also use one myself.

There I was getting some clear tape and stickin it on top of the lyric sheet and onto what you may ask? a microphone stand. It of course works but it really doesn't look good and doesn't work as convenient as a proper music stand. Now, I can finally be proud of my studio because I have a proper music stand hahaha :)

Seriously though, I was happy when I got it. It was more expensive than what I thought but I decided to get the nicer one than the cheaper ones you can get for around 400 pesos. This one had real weight in it and it felt sturdy. This is not to say the cheaper one was bad since those things just need to hold paper in place anyway. But I wanted to get something that would last and that I can possibly put around my workstation area from time to time to maybe rest a controller on or something coz it really is that sturdy.

So there. If you're running a home studio and would want to get some recording jobs, don't forget to get your music stand. It will definitely make the process easier for everyone involved :)

Where Can You Get FREE Quality Loops and Samples?

Free-funrocker

I'm often asked by first time producers where they can get free sounds, loops, and samples.

For new producers, I suggest diving deep into what your DAW can offer first. Try to make the most of the default sounds built in your system so you can get to know your software more and its capabilities. Remember, limitations often bring forth creativity and it's great exercise while you develop your craft.

Once you've used your default library (which can usually take even a year!), then you can take the next step and expand your sound sources/lib.

I think I once posted before some sample and loop sites on the blog which can be a good starting point but for the sake of the entry focusing on free, then here it is...

The most obvious path is to type in "free samples, sounds, loops, patches, synth loops" etc into google and you'll get a ton of links already. But one thing I've noticed is that as overwhelming as it is, a lot aren't really that good.

My suggestion is to visit first the official site of your DAW, I'm sure they have a healthy community of users sharing sounds, patches, loops, etc. Propellerhead has a ton of free "refills" that can be downloaded. Those alone can fill up your library for another year of exploration :)

Then you can also visit commercial loop libraries. Why? A lot of them offer up to 1 gigabyte of sounds and even more just for signing up for a free account. If you also buy from some, you immediately become part of their "customer" list and so you'll receive free sound packs even weekly!

Some sites are producerloops.com, loopmasters.com, soundstosample.com and so much more. You can revisit my old entry on sample sites you can visit if you wanna sign up to get free sounds. Who knows, you just might have some spare cash lying around and you end up buying some :)

Enjoy the search!
