Reason 6! How to Update

Thank God for the Pay What You Want Scheme of Propellerheads for the release of Reason 6 for duo owners like me! It was a good move of them since it felt quite unfair that I bought Reason then Record then bought the upgrades and I'd have to pay the same price like all of the people who didn't even bother upgrading from older versions and not even getting Record so it's a fair move and one I gladly grabbed. 

I'm also thankful to God that I didn't experience the update woes of people as the forum has been filled with various issues in updating for other users so getting to update swiftly in my case was a real breather. I was hesitant of doing the update immediately at first since I was in the middle of a project but I guess I was too excited. 

Unfortunately, Installing Reason 6 automatically renders Record obsolete. I can run Record but not the same as when I had Reason 5. Now it's just Record so all the things I made inside Record with Reason needs to be reopened and re-saved inside Reason 6 now. Bummer. That's the only negative I can see from it but it's a minor thing. 

For those who haven't updated yet, the process is smooth. Just head on over to the props site then pay what you want. Don't feel bad if you can't pay much. They offered a dollar minimum so it's up to you. Don't feel pressured especially if you don't have the money to splurge at the moment. Just thank them if you get it low and buy a Refill from the prop shop later once you save up some money :) Once you've decided, you're led to the checkout page and it's self explanatory from there. I paid paypal so it's your choice if you want it thru paypal or Credit Card. Then after payment, wait a bit and you'll get your invoice and confirmation in the email. Head on over to your account section in the props site and you'll see now that there's a Reason 6 license in your products already. Now if you haven't yet, download the installer (full or demo is the same so don't worry about it). It's a huge file so download will take time. After completing the download, just open the installer file. It will ask you to drag the reason folder into the application folder. It will ask you if you wanna replace the existing one then just select replace and go for it (make sure you don't have files in the Reason program folder!). After that, you can now open the Reason icon in your application folder. It will then work in the background to manage the license online and to configure your ignition key. You'll be asked to restart but after that, you're good to go!

I've just been too busy lately with tons of work that's why I haven't experimented on the new devices, the expanded soundbank, etc but I'll give you an update soon!

Another Addition To The Studio

 Truth be told, before I renovated the studio, the first thing I bought in my excitement was THE studio wall clock. I even got the better model that was silent and you didn't hear any ticking. Unfortunately, the one I bought was damaged and was never used. When the new studio was up, it didn't fit as well. Even my designer (Bernice) didn't want any wall clock hanging around the studio. And so it's only after more than a year that I finally got a replacement. I've been wanting this for months but it's just yesterday that I got to finally purchase it! I'm so happy!

Best to have a little clock for you home studio so that you're aware of the time and date even if you have your little clock on your computer. If you have clients from time to time, it can be very helpful to monitor time especially if you try to charge per hour :)

The clock I got when turned off looks like a block of wood but springs to life when plugged in :) Got it from Dimensione and they have different shapes and sizes if you're into getting one.

OK I'm Back...

Back from a week off to attend my grandma's burial, I'm back bringing you whatever's up in my side of the world. 

This time, I've decided to share a recent project I did.

Because I Have Emotions Too...

I'm posting something more on a personal matter today so sorry there's no music related topic for now. 

Since I got here at my grandparents' house, I've been holding back my tears and stopping myself from breaking down. As some of you may know, my lola (grandmother) passed away and it's been hard for me... for all of us. I just found it hard on my part to even see her coffin... much more to see her lying down inside it so until now, I haven't looked at all. I just can't. I don't think I can take seeing her in that state. I don't want that image burned inside my head. Maybe later before she's taken down I may look but I don't know yet. It's just really hard. I have so many memories of her that I don't want to add a negative one wherein she's lifeless in a coffin. But then again, maybe after writing this post, I may have enough strength to do so. I don't know. 

It seems like I'm just waiting for her just like any ordinary day here where she's seated outside the patio in the morning or afternoon or hanging in her sari sari store where she's all powdered up with baby powder up to her neck plus a healthy dash of perfume, while humming some tune. Or if she see's me straight from bed, she then asks the help to set up the table for food. Good times. I'll always remember her also in her seat at the dining table with the whole family around her.

I will miss her laugh.

Short Break

I Will Miss You Lola!

As I hold back my tears typing this, I say farewell to my grandmother whom I love DEARLY. The family always says I got my humor from her and I'm sure anyone who came to know her will say the same. She's a very funny lady and she has filled the lives of everyone around her especially the grandchildren with a life full of laughter. 

I will always miss her laugh and her good old stories over breakfast lunch and dinner. I shall miss her sitting in front of her little sari sari store just hanging out and greeting everyone she knows and the regulars. 

She was a very loving grandmother and a person with a very kind heart. She has put a lot of our help into school and even adopted a kid to help her out. She has always looked out for everyone and since my grandfather died when I was really young, she was both grandpa and grandma to me for my dad's side. 

It is hard for me to think that she's gone now because I always look forward to seeing her smile and hearing her laugh whenever I fly out to Davao and now that she's gone, I'm afraid the house will be very empty without her. Things will never be the same. 

As selfish as it may sound, I wasn't able to fly out in her last days because I didn't want to see her suffering. I wanted to keep the great memories in my head as it is and not remember her in bed dying. I was beside my sister and my grandfather when they passed and I didn't want another bad memory of a loved one lodged inside my head :(

I am just thankful to God that she left in peace and not in pain. She passed away 6:45am

Beating Deadlines

If you're like me at this point in time, I'm struggling to finish tons of projects before the month ends. With that, I have to organize and set which ones to prioritize to keep my head in check. 

Here's what I do and maybe it can also help you out to line up which is which...

Of course, I first sort it out by deadline. That's the number one rule. There's no use in being organized if you were skipping deadlines. 

The next one after you've sorted out which has the earliest deadline, is where you pick out which is the difficult ones to finish and the easy ones... group those together. 

Now this is where people may have varying approaches...

You may choose the easiest to finish just to get things out of the way and finish ahead of time and so that you can focus later on the harder things you have to accomplish. I sometimes take this route. At the moment, I am!

The other option is the reverse of it. Try to finish the difficult ones first so that it's also out of the way. This way, you're left with the easier ones, which you can finish in no time.

Of course there are a few tradeoffs but it's up to you how to manage them. If you do the easiest first, you'll have enough time to work on the difficult ones because you finished quickly AT FIRST... the problem is if you run out of time since you were working with the difficult ones right before the deadline. On the other hand, if you do the harder ones first, you might run out of time also or you might do something rushed if it eats up your time initially.

For this particular project I'm working on now, I did the easiest ones first so that I won't feel too tired or burned out working on something difficult. That way, I'll have enough inspiration for the difficult batch. But that's just me. Other people feel the reverse wherein they did the hard ones first so that their mind can breathe a bit after. 

Either way, it's helpful to take a step back and look at the big picture to prioritize and do what you can to maximize the most of your time and effort. It's hard to get inspiration for music projects as it is, so it's best to sort them out and choose accordingly!

Music Burnout

It may be your boss or your client, but pressures can mount if you're not maintaining balance in your music-making and just taking in project or just giving deadlines that are impossible to meet just to impress. 

If you have a huge project with lots to finish, allow time to breathe in between and tell your client dates that you factor in rest time. I should know since I live and breathe music-making. It's my hobby and it's my passion but at the same time, it's my work. Sometimes, I may admit, I feel like i'll be burned out with music and I'm rushing to find something to take me away from it for a while just to keep me sane. While i'm looking for an alternative hobby, I go and watch movies. 

What do you do to rest or take time away from the pressures of your work or music-making if it's your job?

It may be common knowledge that we all need to REST but how many of us really do? How many of you really take time and consider getting away for a bit to clear your mind? Because sometimes, it can do more damage than good if you just keep going and going. You won't be as productive and you would've have wasted more time trying instead of just resting a bit and getting back fresh. 

There will always be the temptation once you do rest or take some time off wherein your mind says, "you could do more if you're not doing this, you know?" and it will bug you. But don't let it get the best of you. Sometimes, we will really think how "unproductive" taking time off may be but at the end of the day, you'll realize how bigger of an help it was compared to just working your mind off until you have nothing else to give.

So going back to movies, that's what I did. I know that there are things I needed to finish. But I needed to rest over the weekend to prepare myself to dive in headstrong into the week to finish a ton of projects lined up for the week. I could've started one or two over the weekend but I felt it would be pressing it and just making myself into a music "machine" rather than just resting and getting all inspiration and creativity built up over the weekend to explode once monday hits. 

Rest, my friend. Rest.
